Monadology and Sociology

Gabriel Tarde’s Monadology and Sociology , originally published in 1893, is a remarkable and unclassifiable book. It sets out a theory of 'universal sociology', which aims to explicate the essentially social nature of all phenomena, including the behaviour of atoms, stars, chemical substances and living beings.

http://www-users.cs.york.ac.uk/susan/bib/nf/b/ldwgvnbr.htm This book, already 40 years old, is itself a collection of (lightly edited) papers and presentations from the 1940s, 50s and 60s. So my review is necessarily part historical. However, my main interest is in the science.

The theory of dissipative structure upon which the current discussion is based can be treated as the open systems model extended with a capability to continuously impose a revolutionary change or transformation. The theory of dissipative structure Pioneered by the Brussels school of thought in the 1970s (Prigogine, 1976; Nicolis and Prigogine, 1977, 1989; Prigogine and Stengers, 1984), this theory is firmly rooted in physics and chemistry.

A dielectric is an electrical insulator that can be polarized by an applied electric field . When a dielectric is placed in an electric field, electric charges do not flow through the material as they do in a conductor , but only slightly shift from their average equilibrium positions causing dielectric polarization . Because of dielectric polarization, positive charges are displaced toward the field and negative charges shift in the opposite direction.
