You know those days when you’re in desperate need of sugar and you’ve already downed more gummy vitamins than recommended while seriously considering how many more you can ingest without causing severe harm to your internal organs? They’re just so gooooood. Well… in that case you should make some homemade snickers bars. And I KNOW you know what I’m talking about. I spent the majority of my pre-pubescent and adolescent years scheming just how I would be able to steal my brothers’ Halloween candy. Then I went through a SERIOUS phase of those Snickers ice cream bars. And that you can eat a million of them. These days, it’s rare that I crave actual candy, often preferring some chewy cookies or super rich cheesecake or a bar of amazing chocolate that costs thrice as much as the recent organic meyer lemons I purchased.

They are the peanut butter to my jelly. The salt to my pepper. The broccoli to my… wait, no. And the fabulous part? Nougat layer. Homemade Twix Cookies | Foodie With Family. Cracker Candy. Homemade Gummi Candy. Well the boys are back to school and Bella and I are finding plenty to do! Yesterday — homemade gummy bears! We decided that learning how to make gummy bears, would be a project. All we needed was 1 -3 oz box of flavored gelatin and 2 – 1/4 oz packages of unflavored gelatin, water and candy molds. (we used two candy molds) Place 1/3 cup water in a small sauce pan. Sprinkle the Jello and unflavored gelatin over the water. Place sauce pan over medium heat and stir until gelatin is dissolved, about 2-5 minutes. Fill molds. Allow to cool completely, about 20 minutes. Peel the gummi candy out of the molds.

Enjoy! Make homemade stickers with the unused unflavored gelatin packets. Notes: My son felt the blue ones weren’t flavorful enough. Homemade Taffy. Welcome to our Sweat Sweet Shoppe! If you are alarmed by red dye, excessive amounts of sugar and under age workers turn away now! If not, stick around and see how we made loads of homemade taffy!

Here’s our recipe Homemade Taffy 2 1/2 cups white sugar 3 tablespoons cornstarch 1 cup light corn syrup 1 1/3 cups water 2 tablespoons butter (plus lots extra to butter hands, we probably used over 1/2 of stick of butter on our hands) 1 teaspoon salt 1 – .21oz (6g) package unsweetened, fruit-flavored drink mix (like Kool-Aid) (we used cherry)****however I used Great Value brand from Wal-mart and those were the measurements on the package and it said it made two quarts of drink. 1/2 teaspoon vanilla Butter large jelly roll pan or a cookie sheet with sides really well. In a medium saucepan, stir together the sugar and cornstarch. Directions: Once the taffy has cooled enough to handle, butter hands and begin pulling.

Then pull…and pull…butter hands again…pull… and stretch…pull…more hand buttering…pull… and cut! Homemade Peanut Butter Cups. There is absolutely no question about where my heart lies when it comes to candy. Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups and Reese’s Pieces are it for me. (I know, huge shocker.) Reese’s cups were my favorite Halloween candy as a kid and they were what my Chief Culinary Consultant bought me to celebrate liberation from a quarter-life-peanut-allergy-crisis a couple of years ago. So it’s only natural that I immediately cozy up to recipes like buckeyes and peanut butter cup bars. One of the most wonderful things about blogging is receiving emails from my readers. I get emails from high schoolers, college students, busy moms, grandparents, and even widowers. Each and every one of them gives me the warm fuzzies. These are really super simple to make, and don’t require special equipment. First up, line your mini-muffin tin with paper liners… Then roll the peanut butter mixture into balls, then flatten then slightly… Add some melted chocolate to the bottom of the paper cups, then refrigerate everything…

Sea Salt Caramels with Vanilla Bean. I fell in love with making homemade caramels last fall when I found and re-created the Ale and Pretzel Soft Caramels. Those babies are incredibly addicting! I’m not sure how I stumbled upon Shawna’s recipe for these sea salt caramels recently, but I’m so glad that I found them. These are caramels laced with a hefty dose of fleur de sel (or sea salt) and speckled with gorgeous vanilla beans. Caramel has been an acquired taste for me and over the last year or so I have completely fallen in love with the flavor since making candies and sauces at home.

I buy my fleur de sel (fancy sea salt) at Williams Sonoma. Now, full disclosure – my caramels are a little light and a little flat for two reasons. All that being said, these are PHENOMENAL. And bonus – keep an eye out tomorrow because we’ll be using these candies for another awesome recipe. One year ago: Banana Nut BreadTwo years ago: The Neiman Marcus CookieFour years ago: Oatmeal Raisin Chocolate Chip Cookies. Nutella Twix Bars. I have mentioned before that Cliff does not typically like sweets.

So, when he suggests some kind of dessert I usually try to make it for him. Twix bars are one of his favorites and when you add Nutella they can only get better. This was his pick, but we all enjoyed them. I spend hours making cakes and cheesecakes and he won’t eat them. These Nutella Twix bars took about 10 minutes and he loved them. Sometimes it is nice to make a dessert that doesn’t have 20 steps, 15 ingredients and take 2 hours! Here is what you'll need Cut the caramels in half and soften them in the microwave Press 4 halves on 2 pretzel rods Assemble all the candy bars before you start dipping them in chocolate Pipe a line of Nutella on each bar Spread the Nutella Melt the chocolate Dip each bar in chocolate Flip it and cover the other side in chocolate Let excess chocolate drip off of each bar Sprinkle with sea salt Nutella makes everything better!

And when I say a little time, I actually mean a little time here and a little time there. The layers are made and then refrigerated in between. Make sure that you have plenty of people in mind to share it with, as it makes a whole 13″x9″ pan of Snickers goodness!

Begin by making a chocolate layer with milk chocolate chips, butterscotch chips, and peanut butter. Melt the chocolate and butterscotch chips according to the package. Spread the chocolate layer onto the bottom of a 13″x9″ pan that you’ve lightly greased. Next is the “nougat” layer, which starts out much like fudge. After that comes to a boil for about 5 minutes, remove it from the heat and stir in the marshmallow creme, peanut butter, and vanilla.

The caramel layer is pretty simple: caramels and cream. Lastly, make a final chocolate layer in the same fashion as the first. Homemade SnickersAdapted from Taste of Home. Candy Cane Peppermint Patties for Christmas. During the holiday season, one candy you’ll see around our house is the York Peppermint Patty. I grew up on this candy since my dad is a huge lover of them, well, those and Junior Mints. He seems to have a thing for mint and we do too! I found this recipe for the peppermint patty on Joy of Baking and it looked easy enough to make so I totally went for it. They are really good, especially if you use a good quality chocolate. You can dress them up with a crushed candy cane for a more festive treat to share. See video recipe at Joy of Baking – Peppermint Patties. Fleur de Sel Honey Caramels.
