When I was a young language arts teacher, vocabulary was on the list of things to “cover,” so “cover” it I did. With reading, grammar, writing, and spelling, there never seemed to be time for anything else. Besides that, my vocabulary book contained just enough lessons to do one per week. Even though the words in that vocabulary book were interesting, many of those words were not going to be useful in the future. Then and now, the days of school are filled to the brim. Hairstyles. Flashcards. Free Pictionary Words - Play Pictionary. You'll need: a pencil, some paper, a timer, and at least four players.
Divide into teams (at least two). Each team take turns generating a random pictionary word. One player on the team draws while the other(s) guess what is being drawn. If the correct word is guessed within the time limit, a point is awarded to that team. Teams alternate drawing until a winner is found. Some pictionary gameplay suggestions: Give each team 1 minute to guess; shorten or extend this time depending on players' skill level.

Here, I'm going to add to that earlier musing on this topic by offering up some must dos that took me a few years down the teaching road to figure out. Must Do #1: Be Very Selective As for vocabulary lists, less is better. Long lists of words just don't stick. When you choose, choose high frequency words. And once those big-bang-for-your-buck words are chosen, you will want to really own those as a whole class -- including you, the teacher.
