Radio. Tuva's Podcast. How to turn an old PC into a media centre. There are a scary number of ways of playing back your library of movies and music through a TV screen. You can stream them over the LAN via a games console, play them directly from the cloud on an Internet ready TV or simply hook up your laptop via an HDMI cable. You can even play directly off of your iPod. Many go down the route of least resistance and opt for a do-it-all entertainment on demand set-top box, such as Sky+ or BT Vision, paying a monthly subscription so they never have to get their hands the slightest bit dirty with an extra cable or two. Nothing, however, has yet displaced building your own media centre to sit at the side of your TV as the ultimate symbol of home hackery. Since the days when phrases like 'digital home' still sounded far reaching, we've been inundated with devices that are supposed to make media streaming easier, but they all add either an extra layer of complexity or force you to relinquish some important level of control.

This article describes how to build your own silent, fast, eco-friendly Linux-based PC for use in a digital music listening system.

The PC is based on a high-end Via mini-ITX board, passively cooled case with heatpipe technology, Debian Linux, and a little creative embedded elbow grease. ( Click for larger view of final installation ) This system is the fourth dedicated Linux-based music server that I've built over the past eight years. For the first time, though, I tried to do the job right, rather than just making do with spare parts. After all, digital music is no longer an interesting experiment, but the primary focus of my listening setup, despite all of that vinyl gathering dust in the basement. Vendors of Linux-based music equipment (Sonos comes to mind) often poke fun at amateurs like me who still roll their own -- arguably for good reason.

Yet, a real Linux computer is a toolbox that can do anything the user is capable of doing with it. Defining the system Initial hardware build. Beginners Course on Guitar. That's the FFT (Fast Fourier Transform), it shows us the frequencies being produced.

You'll notice the peaks appear and go away very quickly. I'm using a beaker struck by the eraser end of a pencil. If you want to capture the peaks, just click in the "Hold" check box. The FFT window will then retain all the peaks. Once you've managed to get some good peaks you'll need to turn the scope off. Simply click on the peaks of interest in your FFT window and VA will tell you the frequency.

Ripping Vinyl with GNU/Linux. Recently my Dad started sending me pieces of his vinyl record collection. He has a ton of good stuff from Led Zeppelin to The Beatles and everything in between from 65'-75'. My plan is to archive all the albums to my computer and do some other fancy things with them like converting each track to an MP3, allowing for easy distribution via CD or over the Internet. Below is the process that I used after doing many hours of research on and off line. 1.

The EquipmentIn high school I was able to acquire some relatively decent vintage stereo equipment before the prices shot up on eBay in recent years. Here's the list of hardware I used: 2. In Audacity I play the record watch the levels when it peaks, moving the record level slider correctly so it's right around 0 since I don't want it to be too loud and end up distorted. 4. 5.

FAQ to the museum maintainer | Vadim Makarov | Credits Visitor’s comments Yes, it is an Italian tradition to sing the Internationale two times in a row, yet I don’t know why. -- Roberto Carioli (bruno.carioli@tin.it), December 27, 2002 The Spanish version is apparently some South American translation, different from the one popular in Spain (Arriba, parias de la tierra A pie, famelica legión...) The Polish version seems a bit different from the one I know. It’s hard to tell whether they start from different point or is it a completely different translation as I can’t understand a word from what they sing (I’m a Pole and speak my language fluently).

The only thing that is certain is that it should start with the words Wyklęty, powstań ludu ziemi, Powstańcie, których dręczy głód, Myśl nowa blaski promiennymi Dziś wiedzie nas na bój, na trud.
