- Miking the Grand Piano

I started recording pianos before recording anything else, probably because I am a pianist. It is a notoriously difficult instrument to record, so when the editors of Recording asked me to write about miking acoustic pianos, I began by asking myself “What if I had known then what I know now?” What’s the trouble? The piano is a complicated contraption consisting of up to 7000 discrete parts. Hundreds of strings resonate sympathetically and then project in unpredictable directions. Finally, the sheer size of the Grand with its expanse of strings and the two-position lid calls for placement experimentation—too close and you might not capture the full range and miss out on the room sound, too far and you may get less definition and more room than is desirable.

Tone, tuning, placement Every instrument has registers and dynamics where it sounds the best. Piano tuning is an art, not a science. Stereo—what stereo? Next listen in stereo. Leakage. How To Record a Piano: Microphones, Techniques & Mixing. Question: What's the best way to record a piano at home?

How To Record a Piano: Microphones, Techniques & Mixing

I've only got two microphones and a Digidesign Digi 002; I'd like to record my grand piano at home, but I'm unsure what to do to get the best sound quality. Answer: The piano is one of the hardest instruments to record right, but it's not impossible with a little persistence and the right gear! Recording in stereo with two microphones is the easiest technique. However, if you only have one microphone, placing it above the strings of the piano about 2-3 feet above middle C will give you the most balanced sound. You'll want to choose a matched pair of condenser microphones if you have them; otherwise, any two microphones will work -- just be careful of placement. Let's look at the technique for stereo recording using two microphones. This should give you an acceptable sound; remember, every piano and every microphone is different, so take these tips and experiment. If you've got an extended budget, there's lots of great options.
