"The Treaty Trail, A Treaty Trail lesson plan, Examining Artifacts of Encounter: Students Report on the History of Isaac Stevens' Coat"

Summary: In this exercise, students will have the opportunity to imagine that they are a museum curator who examines old artifacts and documents for clues of an earlier time period. They then have an opportunity to write up their interpretation of this history by crafting a press release announcing the rediscovery of an artifact that was donated to the Washington State Historical Society's collection in 1921. In order to accomplish this task, students will identify significant events from the 19th and early 20th century time periods on a timeline by examining related artifacts, primary documents, and secondary source readings. Essential Questions for Students: How do objects reflect culture?

Causes of Conflict

Because the purpose of the CBA is to analyze sources--not to collect them--our website is an excellent gateway for oral histories, primary source documents, and secondary source essays for students to use in developing their persuasive paper. Additionally, the novel format of oral histories will help students become and remain engaged. This lesson plan fulfills the requirement for the state-mandated Classroom Based Assessment.

We guide teachers and students through the “Causes of Conflict” CBA using the oral histories, historical photographs, and primary and secondary sources found on our site. With our site as a gateway to these resources, along with worksheets for the students, the CBA becomes a manageable and enjoyable student-led research project. Columbia Kids: Issue 4. The Pacific Northwest Collection began in 1905 with a distributed leaflet by University Librarian Henry Canby Coffman requesting the donation of books, manuscripts, maps, pamphlets and other materials which illustrated the history and present condition of Washington State and the broader Pacific Northwest region.

The Pacific Northwest region was defined by past University Librarian, Charles W. Smith, as “that geographical area lying north of California and west of the Rocky mountains, including the states of Oregon, Washington, Idaho and Montana, together with British Columbia, Alaska and the Yukon.” The Collection is substantially built on the generous material and monetary donations of people such as Edmond Meany, Manson Backus, Edward W. Allen, Robert Hitchman and many others. Washington State Historical Society. Home - History: Pacific Northwest. WA State History. Washington State History Contact Mrs.
