SHAPES by Log-Tek USA Inc. Kinect Technology - A Grocery Cart that Can Follow The Wheelchair. This gets better all the time with the Kinect technology and this is still being developed as you can see in the video with bringing laptop with you to the store but I can almost imagine it certainly won’t take long to get this going on a tablet device as well, which would be a bit more convenient for carrying around. I had the chance this week to talk with the Microsoft executive who brought Kinect to the company and it was very interesting and he also stated the possibilities for healthcare are just starting to arise and was very positive about what we stand to see with additional developments. There’s some additional information at the link below and a few other neat technologies you might want to check out. Connect: Who will develop the Kinect caregiving app? How The Nintendo Wii and XBox Kinect Can Help Physical Therapy. Everyone knows that the two hottest video game systems are the Nintendo Wii and The Xbox 360. What makes the Wii so unique is their motion controllers. Within every game you would have to get up and move yourself in order to proceed which makes it a great system for the family. Recently the Xbox came out with the Kinect to compete against the Wii in the motion department. The difference with the Kinect is that you don't have to rely on the controller to help you guide you through the game. With it's camera and motion sensor combo, each game makes you feel like you right in the game, which would make great family/friends quality time. But let's say that you could put these two systems to a different use? Since these systems came out, all I ever thought about was how much fun it could be for family and friends.

With the idea of having one of these systems at a physical therapy place or a nursing home will bring the power of motivation to a who new level. Ryan Orendorff | Kinect Physical Therapy. The Kinect is meant as a additional controller interface to the XBox 360 gaming platform. However, when Microsoft create the device it left the USB connection unencrypted, allowing third parties to reverse engineer drivers to control and receive data from the Kinect. This has allowed a quick and intelligent group of people from around the world to acquire three dimensional images of a space at low cost, as well as interface this device with different computer programs to detect gestures, control web browsers, and take three dimensional models of objects.

This project aims to use the abilities of the Kinect, when paired with the open sourced reversed engineered drivers, to assess a patients distensibility and flexibility as a measure of their progress through a physical therapy regiment, and provide ways to make this physical therapy more exciting through the use of games. This project started on January 13th, 2011 and is continuing to January 26th, 2011. Success! Microsoft Kinect - Healing Through Gaming. Can’t play, won’t play | Hide&Seek - Inventing new kinds of play. I like neologisms. We need new words because we have new ideas, and ideas are the only things that break the law of the conservation of energy. Where once there was nothing there now is something, and the history of the neologism is a history of those moments of pure creation. ‘Gamification’, that said, can go take a long walk off a short pier. I’m heartened beyond measure to see that it’s been deleted from Wikipedia. ‘Gamification’, the internet will tell you, is the future. That problem being that gamification isn’t gamification at all. Games manage to produce all these drivers by being complex, responsive mechanisms. Games give their players meaningful choices that meaningfully impact on the world of the game.

And living or dying is important. It’s crucial that we stop conflating points and games. Firstly, because it devalues points. But secondly, because it misrepresents games. Gamification is the wrong word for the right idea. So, in summary: Or, in other words: Nitrogen's posterous - embedded linux, startups, hardware hacking. In order to monitor motion and detect fall, a novel concept of fall detection system is implemented using Microsoft’s Kinect. Fall monitoring systems add to seniors’ independence | Engineering | University of Missouri | Mizzou Engineering.

A new monitoring system being developed by Professor Marjorie Skubic of the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department and her interdisciplinary team at the University of Missouri could help older adults avoid falls before they happen and alert health care professionals when they do. Major injuries resulting from falls often lead to rapid decline in other aspects of the quality of life for older adults. Preventing and reacting to falls can be a challenge to health care providers, even in retirement centers. When an older person chooses to stay at home, monitoring their movements has been difficult without a serious breach of privacy, like live video cameras, or extremely costly, like a live-in nurse.

STAYING HOME AND STAYING SAFE “The goal is to allow independence and what’s called, ‘aging in place,’” said Skubic. “We don’t want them to have to do anything different,” said Skubic. And what happens if they get up to use the bathroom in the middle of the night? 1. 2. 3. 4. Project Confidence System Demo Fall Detection. NESTA - Serious Games.
