Will Europe keep financing coal pollution overseas? WWF points out that the over-exploitation of fossil fuels - such as coal, gas and oil - is putting the whole of humanity under threat from climate change.

Will Europe keep financing coal pollution overseas?

A European group of Finance Ministry officials will meet Monday 2nd February to finalise the EU position on public support for coal power plants abroad. WWF demands that the EU stops financing this coal pollution, before the United Nations Climate Change Conference in December 2015. Coal is the single largest contributor to climate change globally, and export credits are the biggest source of public finance for coal overseas. OECD countries are negotiating how to curb this form of financial support before the United Nations Climate Change Conference in December 2015.

In line with a business-as-usual proposal from the coal industry, the European Commission proposal being debated by Council would merely ban support for an obsolete type of coal plant that is already being quickly phased out by the market.
