I'm far from being a master seamstress, I just work with what I know and try to learn as I go. I've never actually owned a maxi dress before, but now I might be hooked. I saw this dress on Mod Cloth months ago, way before it was warm enough to wear, and thought, "Wow, that's a unique design. What a weird combination, actually. But it's cute! I could make that! " So I bought some grey cotton for like $3/yard at JoAnn, used some ivory lace I already had, and added four (weird, in my opinion) two-hole buttons with the metal hole grommets.

The Mod Cloth ones are probably fabric-covered, but mine aren't. I did not have the right pattern at all, so I had to modify one (Butterick B4915, now out of print). I've had this problem twice before and both times ended up just sort of modifying this pattern, I think, when cutting. That piece would be the top, gathered into the bottom and neckline, and I also cut a smaller piece for the lining.

I added some vertical tucks to my bodice as well as the gathers over the cups. What's funny is, I thought this was a weird color combination, but shortly after I had cut this dress out I saw another, very similar one from Lulu's: DIY dresses & skirts.
