Future students often ask “what books should I be reading while preparing for the seminary journey?” That’s a great question! Most importantly, you should be carefully reading God’s Holy Word. Beyond this, take a look at our abbreviated list of pre-seminary reading that RTS faculty have assembled. The list is not required reading but is merely intended to provide a great start on some key areas. Many of the books included are required texts for courses taught at all of the RTS campuses.

Most emphasize historic doctrines of grace, scriptural authority, true piety and a biblical view of church, ministry and missions. We trust that as you begin reading these pre-seminary selections you will later peruse works from the recommended reading list on our website. Managing God’s Money, Randy Alcorn’s most recent book, is a life changer. I say this because the book has been a catalyst in initiating conversations with my wife that we never would have had otherwise. We already knew that everything belongs to God. We already understood the principles of being property managers for God. We were even tithers, and we felt good about it. But things are now different; instead of smugly believing that God is surely proud of us for how we manage his money, we are now investigating ways to go beyond a tithe, to dedicate all of our assets to His glory and to intentionally invite some trepidation into our financial lives by giving away much of the nest egg we have accumulated.

I believe the power of this book is Randy’s ability to move us from doctrine to practice. It is one thing to give mental assent to a truth, but a wholly different thing to openly seek just how it should be applied to one’s life. What do I like best about the book? Heaven and finances. Glorifying God in All You Do. Excerpted from Pastor Mark’s sermon Glorifying God from the 2006 1st Corinthians: Christians Gone Wild sermon series and edited by the Mars Hill Blog “Live to the glory of God!” Christians throw this out because we’re lazy and we love bumper stickers. There’s always that one guy who’s saying, “Glorify God, brother!” But what does that even mean? “Glorify God.” God is a God of glory. When people encounter the glory of God, they respond in ways of fear, awe, wonder, worship, dread, respect, conviction, repentance, humility.

The Question Paul says if you want to be a good missionary, if you want to love your city, if you want to see people get saved, if you want to see lives get changed, if you find yourself in friendships and working relationships with people who totally disagree with you and their sexuality and their spirituality and their life is not about Jesus and the Bible, then the one question you have to keep asking is, “Will this or will this not bring the most glory to God?

C.S. Successful Student - Resources - Setting Captives Free. Dear Friend, This is written for those who are enrolled in the Way of Purity/Door of Hope Course and are actively pursuing freedom from pornography and sexual impurity. As of today many students have signed up to go through these course, we have noted some similarities, and we wanted to present these to you to help you to be a "successful student" that gets free from all forms of sexual impurity. Below are 10 things that successful students do who become free from impurity. The following description is of someone who has completed the The Way of Purity course. Coming into purity is a process, and the idea is to implement these truths as soon as possible. Feel free to print these out and review them often. 1--Students who get free from impurity persist , they do not drop out. 2--Students who get free from impurity become broken before the Lord. 3--Students who get free from impurity interact often with their mentor at Setting Captives Free, and daily with their accountability partner.

How to Change Your Mind. The beginning of a New Year—and a new decade—is an an excellent time to try something new. As you make your list of resolutions and goals I want to recommend adding a simple four step process that could transform your life by, quite literally, changing your mind. After reading the entire post the vast majority of readers will snicker at such a hyperbolic claim and never implement the method I outline. A smaller number will consider the advice intriguing, my assertion only a slight exaggeration, but will also never implement the method. A tiny minority, however, will recognize the genius behind the process and apply it to their own life. This group will later say that my claim was an understatement. This post is written for those people. A few years ago I stumbled across a variation of the four steps in a blog post by my Evangel co-blogger Fred Sanders and implemented his recommendation that day. 1.

Since this method is adapted from a book by James M. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. What My Obedience to God Costs Other People. If we obey God, it is going to cost other people more than it costs us, and that is where the pain begins. If we are in love with our Lord, obedience does not cost us anything— it is a delight. But to those who do not love Him, our obedience does cost a great deal. If we obey God, it will mean that other people’s plans are upset. They will ridicule us as if to say, “You call this Christianity?”

We could prevent the suffering, but not if we are obedient to God. We must let the cost be paid. When our obedience begins to cost others, our human pride entrenches itself and we say, “I will never accept anything from anyone.” A lack of progress in our spiritual life results when we try to bear all the costs ourselves. Beware of the inclination to dictate to God what consequences you would allow as a condition of your obedience to Him. Honey and Locusts. Why Christians Go Postal Over Facebook, Jay-Z, Yoga, Avatar, and Culture in General. Images by Patrick Mahoney It was only last week that the Washington Post asked for my opinion on the New Jersey pastor calling for Christians to stop using Facebook. Had I known what would erupt this week, I might have agreed with him.

The big idea of my Post blog was that Facebook doesn’t cause adultery, people do. Calling for a boycott of Facebook is not the answer because the issue is the heart. Facebook, like many technologies and cultural phenomena, is an opportunity for my heart and the hearts of others you and I interact with to be revealed and transformed. The backstory is this. Back to Facebook, where I posted that despite using bowling words, Jay-Z is a genius. This blog is not intended to defend everything I’ve ever said and done, as, like all sinners, there are things in retrospect I would say and do differently. Are You a Missionary? What I’ve found over the years is that whenever I speak about something culturally related from a Christian perspective, a debate rages.
