Photograph: Frank Baron for the Guardian We are all media junkies now. We Britons spend more than four hours a day watching television, the highest level of consumption for at least five years, which is probably good news given that there are 510 channels to choose from. We bought 9.55m television sets last year, fewer than in 2009, but twice the number sold back in 2002. Of those 9.55m sets nearly a third were larger than 33in. Radio listening has never been greater either – a record 91.6% of us listen to at least 15 minutes in a week. This wasn't what was supposed to happen. Ofcom, though, gives us some clues as to the secrets of the new British efficiency. What the deluge of official data also shows is how we come to expect technological change.

Photograph: Jim Wileman /Alamy It came as a surprise to many last week when the Office for National Statistics released a set of figures revealing a decrease in heavy drinking in Britons between the ages of 16-24. (Our older compatriots were not so well behaved. Shame on you.) What happened to the kids nursing half-empty bottles of Smirnoff on night buses or teens throwing WKD back like lemonade? Perhaps we're changing. The easy explanation is money – there's less of it about. It seems too obvious, then, to blame the decline on a lack of money. Perhaps there's something much more obvious going on, something much more optimistic. Interaction has changed drastically over the past decade and using alcohol as social lubricant seems pretty formulaic and unnecessary.
