So You’ve Graduated from College, Now What? | AlmostFearless.com. An update to this post is here. With graduation season wrapping up, I’m remembering my post-college days in 2000, just after the “dot com” bubble burst and suddenly all those folks who flocked to Seattle and Silicon Valley were unemployed, fresh out of school and totally screwed. Ten years later, are things much different? This spring, I’ve gotten a number of emails essentially asking the same question: “I want to wait out the bad economy, do some traveling, but I’m a broke-ass college student… what should I do?” If you want to spend your year after college traveling – but you have no money saved — here’s what I would do” 1.

Defer your student loans, if you have them. After graduation you automatically get a six month reprieve, but in six months from now, you can defer again. The interest you accrue during this period is nominal, and while you do have to pay them eventually, it’s no reason to not travel. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. 9. 10. Don’t think this works? After the shipwreck, I needed to shut myself away and decompress for awhile in Bali.

And I found the perfect place to do it — the Alam Sari. After hearing about the accident, the Alam Sari, a sustainable resort in the village of Keliki, just outside Ubud, invited me for a weeklong stay. I couldn’t get there fast enough. After nearly six months of cheap and often strange lodging, staying at a place like this — the Alamanda Suite — was a dream. The Alam Sari feels like it’s isolated, in the middle of the Bali jungle. On the drive there, I passed canyons, rivers and waterfalls, all covered with lush vegetation. But in reality? Sustainability is a major topic in travel and tourism these days, and sustainable resorts are becoming increasingly popular. The Alam Sari is an excellent sustainable resort in Bali, and their attention to detail is amazing. Like many resorts, they use solar heating. And that gorgeous wooden furniture? And that’s just the tip of the surface. Fairytale Destinations.

Is it a dream or is it for real? These places will make you wonder whether you step into the land of magic and fantasy or still firmly stand on the ground. With unearthly nature, unreal landscapes or fairy tale architecture, these destinations will take you far away from your humdrum reality. Picturesque Colmar in France, considered the most beautiful city in Europe, looks like it came straight out of a fairy tale. This tiny town in Alsace is famous not only for its magically colourful old town. Colmar, situated along the Alsatian Wine Route, is called the "Capital of Alsatian Wine" - it boasts a sunny microclimate and is the second driest city in France, making it ideal for wine growing. As if being the wine capital was not enough, Colmar, with its pretty squares, fountains and canals, is also called the "little Venice" (la Petite Venise).

It is also the home town of Frédéric Bartholdi, who designed the Statue of Liberty, and the painter Martin Schongauer. Saksun, Faroe Islands.
