A Review of Traffic Calming Techniques. T. Harvey (HETS) 4.1 Traffic calming on links 4.2 Traffic calming at junctions 4.3 Gateways 4.4 Traffic management measures 4.5 Traffic calming on main roads 5.1 Speed reduction 5.2 Accident reduction 5.3 Noise reduction 5.4 Air pollution 1.1 Traffic calming is fundamentally concerned with reducing the adverse impact of motor vehicles on built up areas. 1.2 The most effective traffic calming measures for reducing vehicle speeds involve vertical shifts in the carriageway. 1.3 Studies have shown that traffic calming can reduce accident levels by up to 40%, and have a significant impact on reducing the severity of accidents. 1.4 Area wide traffic calming schemes seek to calm both main roads and residential roads, however main road traffic calming is still a relatively new concept, and generally does not involve the use of vertical shifts. 1.5 The use of traffic signals in traffic calming schemes has been very limited. 2.1 Traffic calming is largely still in its infancy. 4.1 Traffic calming on links.

PDF Version (841 KB) PDF files can be viewed with the Acrobat® Reader® 20.1 Introduction Traffic calming has been defined in Traffic Calming: State of the Practice as follows:(1) Traffic calming is the combination of mainly physical measures that reduce the negative effects of motor vehicle use, alter driver behavior and improve conditions for nonmotorized street users. In this State of the Practice report, route modification, traffic control devices, and streetscaping were distinguished as being separate from traffic calming. In many cities, however, these techniques (as well as education and enforcement) are also included in traffic–calming programs.

Figure 20–1 shows schematic examples of traffic–calming devices and elements. Figure 20–1. This chapter explores the principles of traffic calming and provides a variety of studies, design details, and photographs of areas where traffic calming has been effectively used in the United States and in Europe. 20.2 Traffic–Calming Objectives Medians.
