Eric Berlow. A Trillion and Change: How Much Emerging Markets Will Spend on IT - Arik Hesseldahl - Enterprise. We’ve been hearing for years how the emerging economies of the world are, well, not only emerging, but growing like weeds in a fertilizer factory. Now we have some idea of what that actually means, courtesy of the tech research firm Gartner: Collectively, countries that fit into the “emerging” category will spend a cool $1.22 trillion on IT — professional and consumer technologies combined — this year. Now you understand why executives at large tech companies like Intel, IBM, Hewlett-Packard and Cisco Systems get so excited when they talk about places like Brazil, India and elsewhere.

Brazil in particular is just a big part of a surging Latin American region, Gartner says, where spending will total $326 billion; nearly half of that in the professional sector, the other half in consumer. By adding Mexico, Gartner also adds a fifth member to the four-country BRIC club comprised of Brazil, Russia, India and China. With CES this week, there is even more focus on the state of mobile technology than usual. So I enjoyed browsing this cool infographic from SoMobile.com. Here are a few details: Having gathered a number of statistics from around the world, our infographic also reveals that around 2.7 million SMS messages are sent in China every day, which is no doubt why 70 percent of Chinese mobile users – all 666,120,000 of them – admit they simply “couldn’t live” without their mobile.

In Russia, it seems as if people can’t live without one or more handsets – with each person having, on average, 1.54 mobile phones. The full image is below or you can head to SoMobile.com for all the details! Like this: Like Loading...

Tattoos Bolstering A B2B Tech Company’s Brand? Exactly. Taking the “every company is the media” mantra to the next level, Intel publishes the Free Press. While I’m not big on the name - it is free, but not exactly the cleverist moniker - the execution is pretty darn good. Which brings me back to tattoos and one of the articles in the Free Press that investigated the tattoos that adorn Intel employees. Fairies. Dragons. Leprechauns. Paw prints. Apparently not. You can see a sampling of the tatted chip heads below. Why does a semiconductor company scour the globe to find and photograph employees with tattoos? It’s all part of the macro communications objective to show the company’s humanity through storytelling, a topic addressed a few months ago in Putting A Face On A Company.

I’m impressed with the Free Press and how Intel articulated the mission: Our goal is not to duplicate the news and cover every major milestone or event from Intel. Be Sociable, Share!

Intel Blurs Line Between News And PR. Journeys across the Internet often turn up surprising things in the most unlikely of places, including Intel's new "Free Press" site -- which is in 'beta'. If the irony isn't already hitting you, let me spell it out for you. A news site without by-lines run by Intel isn't much of a news site at all.

But is Intel's elaborate PR front looking to at least offer some objective material? Here's the the scoop... Intel's Free Press feature article is about the iPad and tablet computers potentially eating up netbooks. It's actually a lengthy read, citing multiple sources and many options on both sides of the story, but ends with a nice little tie-in to Intel's dual-core atom CPUs and references people who need to use Microsoft Office or play "World of Warcraft on low resolution" while on the go, along with the insinuation that they're simply "10-inch notebooks" and not 'netbooks' anymore. Cute. But that does seem a bit nefarious. We'll keep our eyes open as Intel expands their Free Press site.

Reports of Netbook's Death Greatly Exaggerated... Posted by Guest Writer - October 27, 2010 With all the excitement around the iPad and predictions of dire impacts to the netbook market and perhaps even laptop sales, we got to wondering: Is the netbook really dead? Nifty, low-cost netbooks hit the scene in late 2008 and sold over 36 million units in 2009, according to ABI Research. Even with projected sales of 35-43 million units this year, the future of these diminutive laptop-like computers is being pulled under a dark cloud of doubt as new tablets grab the limelight and spare cash from consumers. Collection of new netbook designs on display at the Intel Developer Forum in San Francisco in September 2010. "The all-in-one nature of media tablets will result in the cannibalization of other consumer electronics devices such as e-readers, gaming devices and media players," said Carolina Milanesi, research vice president at Gartner.

"Early adoption of media tablets is not outpacing netbooks," said ABI Research principal analyst Jeff Orr. Intel Establishes Its Own Free Press - Digits. Posted by Guest Writer - October 18, 2010 By Intel Free Press A little over a year ago, Intel Corporation wrapped up an $884 million acquisition of software company Wind River -- Intel's biggest acquisition in a decade until it announced the still-pending McAfee acquisition in September.

Unlike some of Intel's past acquisitions, Wind River was both dramatic and different when compared to some of the large acquisitions of the past decade. The company has been pioneering computing inside embedded devices since 1981, and its technology is found in more than 500 million products. "Wind River's business was and is a great strategic fit with where Intel is going in the handheld, embedded, and consumer electronics spaces," said Renée James, senior vice president and the head of the Software and Solutions Group. "However, they also have a strong and profitable product lineup that we did not want to hinder. So, we deliberately took a different approach. " Best year in a decade Partnership in action. How Intel Uses "Wargames" To Beef Up Enterprise Security.

Posted by Guest Writer - October 19, 2010 By Intel Free Press Enterprise security today is equivalent to an arms race. There really is no such thing as winning, but rather it's a challenge of staying one step ahead of your opponent -- the attackers. As attackers evolve and become more sophisticated, large corporate enterprises must follow suit. Many companies are investing millions of dollars securing data centers, factories, offices and other assets against increasingly sophisticated security threats. Assessing the risk and taking precautions are usually handled by a single group of people -- typically internal information security specialists -- and are aimed at understanding vulnerabilities in a particular computing environment. Security threats however, come from living, breathing opponents who are creative, knowledgeable, collaborative and often very determined to inflict damage. "The threat from the stereotypical high school hackers out for some fun has become trivial," Casey said.
