The speech-language pathology and adaptive physical education teams collaborated to adapt and retell The Mitten by Jan Brett.

We set up an obstacle course to simulate the events of the story. For each of the animals in the story, we researched or used descriptions from the story to describe animal sounds and movements, and then we set up an obstacle for each animal to practice the movements and sounds. At the end of the obstacle course, all the students crawled inside our "mitten" (a parachute) before it was sneezed off!

Materials: Procedure: The students came into PE class and during their warm up listened a sound recording of The Mitten. First we introduced the mole, the students made a "sniffing" noise like a mole and then crawled through the tunnel obstacle. To wrap it up we showed the students one of the mittens they looked at in the beginning of class paired with the over-sized mitten sewn out of felt. I’ve been working with teachers to develop learning strategies to support the Common Core literacy and comprehension skills that students commonly use across the content areas. This pdf includes 18 lessons organized in two ways: by comprehension strategy – defining, summarizing and comparing and by target reader – non-reader, word caller and turned-off reader. The lessons are designed as templates which teachers can modify to use in their specific subject areas. Strategies for Struggling Readers 3MB pdf There are two key elements that teachers should keep in mind when working in each skill area. Defining Before the formal definition has been introduced, students should be asked to make connections between their prior knowledge and the term. After the term has been defined, students need activities to more deeply process the term.

If you have been following my blog the past few months, you know that I am quickly turning into a Google teacher. I find myself thinking of the standards I want to teach and integrating them with technology tools to enhance the learning experience in an authentic way.

Such was the case as we entered our 13 colonies unit. In the past, I had the students make these fabulous colony "balloons". They enjoyed working together to research and create the project. But this year, I wanted to do something different and with the availability of the chrome books in our school, I decided that we could use the Google Suite to make the research a bit easier for all.

(however, ALL of this project can be done without computers. First, I created one document in Google Sheets for each colony. Once that was completed, I went home and used the "Save as Doc" add-on and created a word doc from their research. (affiliate link) to write the graffiti facts around the colony. The Doorbell Rang -- a cute kids book for teaching division. The Doorbell Rang tells the simple story of Sam and Victoria, who were just about to sit down and enjoy fresh cookies when two friends arrive and the four children divide up the cookies four ways. Soon, the doorbell rings again, and then again, and each time the number of cookies per person dwindles. The illustrations in this book are admittedly super dated looking! However, we've finally come to acknowledge that it's not the kids who are turned off by dated illustrations. It's us -- the grown-ups! It's the grown-ups who deem a book 'too dated' simply because we were around back then, so we can recognize the illustrations of our youth.

But kids don't. :) So...we are trying to be more 'forgiving' of older books, and consider the storyline a little more strongly. And this is a book that stands the test of time. The division lesson in this book is SOLID. Reading Levels: Interest Level: K-Gr. 3 / Grade Level Equivalent: 2.1 / DRA Level: 16 / Guided Reading: J / Lexile Measure: 340L.
