Zentangles. Zentangle: Meditation Through Pattern-Drawing. By Maria Popova If greater creativity and more mental balance are among your new year’s resolutions, look no further than Zentangle — a type of meditation achieved through pattern-making, created by artist duo Maria Thomas and Rick Roberts.

Zentangle: Meditation Through Pattern-Drawing

Each pattern is built one line at a time, organically combining simple patterns into complex zentangles in unplanned, unexpected ways that grow, change and unfold on the page as you enter an immersive state of flow. Totally Tangled offers a fantastic introduction to the relaxing and beautiful practice through step-by-step instructions and over 100 original tangles. We’re particularly taken with Zentagle because its basic principle — building on simple shapes and combining different patterns into complex creativity — is such a beautiful visual metaphor for our core philosophy of combinatorial creativity.

Zentangle

In a word, a doodle. A structured, contained doodle. The term 'Zentangle' was coined by Rick Roberts and Maria Thomas when, one day, Maria described her experience, as she created her art, as "feeling timeless, free and engendering a sense of deep well-being". Rick recognised that she was in a meditative state and so Zentangles were born. Zentangle. Tile-tim-012. Verdigoh+like+leaf.jpg 1,600×946 pixels. : For my fellow tangle junkies: some thoughts on collecting and organizing tangle patterns

I didn't always know this about myself, or maybe I wasn't always one and I'm just settling into my own shoes a little as I get older. But "ehh.... good enough" is probably not something you'll hear me say. Because if I'm working on something I care about, and I know it's not the best I am capable of, I have to force myself to not redo every little thing and make it as good as I know it could be (and yes, I do realize that this occasionally makes me a little bit annoying). For example, I've attempted a few methods for collecting and organizing tangle patterns... index cards, flip cards, graph paper pads, Moleskine notebooks, different-sized journals, a small binder with page protectors, et cetera. PARADOX, and then some. A Tutorial. Here are Zentangle's instructions for the tangle Paradox, from the February 2008 newsletter.

PARADOX, and then some. A Tutorial

Paradox is one of my favorite tangles and I seem to do it rather well. Perhaps those two things are related! :-) I've been asked about it occasionally, how did I do this or that. I thought about doing a video but that's just a bit more than I can take on right now. So I decided to post some tips and ideas here, and hope to make them clear enough. The elegant curves show best if the lines are close together. Agh! Then again, never say never. Munchin - alternate steps. Munchin, and then some.

Munchin - alternate steps

Munchin is one of Zentangle's official tangles, designed by Molly Hollibaugh, Maria's daughter. Munchin is based on triangles and has a nice, slightly mottled look when finished. You can see Molly's instructions, which begins with some random dots, in the Zentangle newsletter here. I had forgotten that method until I taught Munchin to a class that included two CZTs, who reminded me about it! Because any tangle is usually drawn in an odd-shaped space provided by the string, I had come up with another way to draw Munchin, which I have been teaching.

Ultimately, in order to draw Munchin, you need your space sub-divided into triangles. Here are some odd shapes you might have, courtesy of your string: three, four, and five sides. If the shape is triangular you're good to go. Here's one possible configuration of triangles for each of these shapes: And here are those same shapes complete with Munchin.

Well… according to the Zentangle website, “Zentangle is an easy to learn method of creating beautiful images from repetitive patterns. It is a fascinating new art form that is fun and relaxing. It increases focus and creativity. Zentangle provides artistic satisfaction and an increased sense of personal well being. Zentangle is enjoyed by a wide range of skills and ages and is used in many fields of interest.” A further look through the Zentangle® website reveals an exciting new abstract form of art that encourages creativity, embracing your mistakes and discovering patterns.
