Famous Halal Guys, Northwest Corner of 52nd Street & 6th Avenue If you're a street food lover in New York City, you've probably heard about the Famous Halal Guys cart on the corner of 53rd Street and 6th Avenue, the one where, come late night and lunchtime, a line forms down the block for their chicken and lamb over rice. By day it's on the Southeast corner of the intersection, but at night it parks on the Southwest corner * At night you'll find several Famous Halal Guys in the area—last night I counted four official Famous Halal Guys carts in and near the intersection.
You've also probably heard about the other cart, called New York's Best Halal Food, that literally swaps places with them, taking their Southwest corner by day. The "imposter cart" on the Southwest corner of 53rd and 6th. A genuine offshoot of the Famous Halal Guys, formerly Shendy's Halal.

This caused me to join forces with my good friend, fellow foodlover, and producer of new PBS documentary show Kimchi Chronicles Eric Rhee to embark on a quest to uncover the recipe for legit halal. Now, there are a lot of wildcard factors with trying to recreate the ambrosia from that cart.
So here is my qualifier: Our chicken recipe is not exactly what you get from that cart. Yes, that is a bold statement, but try this recipe and see. The best part? Serving lunch to late-night, these carts dish up a container full of chicken rice that tastes like nothing else, crave-worthy and totally singular.
To taste this particular chicken and rice you can get yourself to Midtown or try the home version, Kenji's Halal Cart-Style Chicken and Rice with White Sauce, a spot on rendition of the street food classic. Marinated in oregano, lemon, and coriander, chicken thighs are browned, chopped into chunks and served over a pile turmeric-yellow rice. Of course, it wouldn't be halal-cart style without the ubiquitous (and none too fancy) salad of iceberg and tomatoes, and that mysterious sweet-sour-tangy white sauce that just has to be ladled all over the chicken and rice for true street-style authenticity.
Halal Chicken & Rice (NYC style) Recipe. Ingredients For Tzatziki Sauce-2 Plain yogurt -2 Cloves of garlic-2 Cucumbers (peeled, seeded, diced)- 1 tbsp red wine vinegar-1 Lemon-Olive oil, dill For Chicken and Rice (Serves 2-3)-Boneless chicken thighs (1 package - 6pcs)-Basmati rice-Ginger (fresh, 1/2 tbsp finely chopped)-1 Tomatoes (vine-ripe, sliced into eights)-1 Tomato juice (small can)-1 Onion (white or yellow, large strips)-Iceberg Lettuce (-2 Cloves of garlic-Cumin, curry, salt, pepper, paprika, tabasco and olive oil For Tzatziki sauce1. Mix olive oil, garlic, dill, vinegar, cucumbers and lemon juice into food processor and blend until smooth. 2.
