Recently we were tasked with identifying the most outstanding difference between the average American online netizen and it's counterpart in China. After reviewing several key sources, trending maps, growth in numbers and more; an alarming number was produced. By far the biggest growth is yet to happen in the natural expansion of Internet access in China.
However the cultural phenomenon that is micro-blogging is taking China by storm. Well established network Sina and its (Twitter clone) Weibo are steam rolling the industry in a major way--and the public are eating it up. In China the inclination to document ones life and share actively is now most evident in the massive growth of micro-blogging. The now famous Weibo micro blogging platform is only in its infancy (about 12 months) and boasts over 120,000,000 active users.
Social Media Involvement Greater in China than U.S. Due to the large population discrepancy, it probably won’t surprise anyone that China has more broadband users that the United States. What might surprise you is just how much more active the Chinese are online, especially when it comes to engagement with social media. An interesting study by Netpop Research entitled Social Face-Off : A Comparison of U.S. and China Social Media Use finds that people in China are more involved in every type of social media activity of which they studied.
First, some general facts about the two internet communities: of the broadband users age 13 and above, the Chinese have a much younger, more educated internet population than the U.S. They also spend more time online per weekday. Not only is China spending more time online, but while they are online they are interacting with social media at a much greater rate than the U.S. People who can be described as “heavy contributors” (engaging in 6+ social media activities) are 2 out of every 5 in China. They've also built something unique in their country: a place where people can find love, speak out, and be whoever they want to be.

It was the worst pickup attempt that Dong Jin had ever heard. The real Facebook is not available behind the Great Firewall of China, except to netizens rich enough and technologically savvy enough to buy access to proxy servers, because government censors have blocked it as a foreign threat.
In the absence of these web titans, dozens of Chinese copycats have sprung up, but none tell a story of evolving, modern China like the fake Facebooks, some of which mimic Facebook down to page architecture and color scheme. Email marketing (97%) and company websites (96%) are the most frequently used marketing channels for all respondent groups. Social media marketing (82%) followed, with search engine optimization (SEO) (79%) and search engine marketing (SEM) (72%) relatively close behind. The most popular manual marketing channel was direct mail, used by 65% of all respondents. The mobile channel has not caught on in a widespread manner yet, with only 22% of all respondents emailing or sending SMS text messages to mobile devices.
