E.ON UK plc. Greater Gabbard Offshore Wind Farm – United Kingdom. The Greater Gabbard Offshore Wind Farm Project was developed by a 50:50 joint venture between Fluor International Limited and Airtricity (acquired by Scottish and Southern Energy (SSE) in February 2008). Having successfully completed the development phase and signed the construction contract, Fluor sold its 50 percent stake in Greater Gabbard Offshore Winds Ltd to Airtricity. The project site is located approximately 25 kilometers offshore within the Thames Estuary Strategic Environmental Assessment Area and adjacent to two sand banks known as the Inner Gabbard and The Galloper.
The 147-square kilometer project site will encompass the wind turbines and associated infrastructure, including the met masts and offshore substation platforms. Connection to the high-voltage national grid will be made at a new onshore substation located at Sizewell, Suffolk. About Gunfleet Sands. Gunfleet Sands Offshore Wind Farm consists of two phases, Gunfleet Sands 1 and 2.
The construction phase for the total project comprising Gunfleet Sands 1 and 2 commenced in September 2008. Commissioning started in 2009, and the wind farm reached full production during the spring of 2010. The total capacity of the offshore wind farm is 172MW. Gunfleet Sands 1 consists of 30 turbines each of 3.6MW and Gunfleet Sands 2 consists of 18 turbines each with a capacity of 3.6MW. The total area of the phase 1 development is 10km2 and 7.5km2 for phase 2. DONG Energy and Marubeni CorporationThe wind farm was constructed by DONG Energy, and September 2011 Marubeni Corporation acquired a 49.9% stake in the 172MW Gunfleet Sands offshore wind farm.
