Dreamer. When I was younger, about 3 or 4, I often wore long strips of toilet paper on my head. It was my version of a wedding veil. My brother is older than me by two years and would walk me down the hallway until we reached the end, thus pronouncing us husband and wife. His attire was a super hero pajama outfit of some sort — Spiderman, Superman, the Incredible Hulk, etc. That is the only memory I can recall when I blissfully fantasized about getting married. Being Puerto Rican, female, raised Catholic, and living in the Midwest meant that I was to live at home until I got married. I couldn’t stay in Indiana where it felt destined that I was to go from daughter to wife. The summer afternoon was heavy with humidity, the air so thick it was like walking through soft wet walls.
