" I don't just love to read books though - I love the feel of a book in my hands - it's heft, the texture of it's pages, the gilt of the artwork and lettering on an antique pressed cover...and of course, since learning to read in childhood, the thought of what wonderful secrets could be hidden inside. I love books. But what about altering and repurposing books? Years ago the thought would never have entered my mind because my books - they were sacred to me.

But after years of going to used book sales and increasing my collection to the point of ridiculousness - I mean, I had books that I bought for $1 whose pages were loose and falling out but they had fabulous antique Art Nouveau covers - it was at this point I realized, there was no actual monetary value in this damaged book - the only value it had was sentimental value to me, due to its cover art.

Because it was made as a wedding gift, I wanted it to open flat the way a coptic opens, but because the bride and groom had both spent time in Japan, I wanted to style it as a Japanese binding. WELCOME!!!... To the first post of a new, year-long blog series: Journaling The Garden. Each week, I plan to share a mix of art journaling tips, techniques, prompts, tutorials, and finished pages, as I record my experiences communing with nature. I am very excited about this endeavor, as it is something I have been pondering and longing to do for several years now. I hope you will follow along on this adventure, perhaps even participate by starting your own nature journal. So when starting any sort of journaling project, the first decision isselecting a book. Because of my affinity for vintage documents and handwriting, I decided to use an antique ledger book.

Although there was no significant damage to the binding or structure of the book the inside cover page was torn, so I simply applied hinge tape, (a product I had readily available) to prevent the tear from becoming larger and give the tornpage strength. Done. No more pages to fill, ready for it's permanent place in history! Today i wanted to post a bunch of art. My schedule has been so crazy, you are probably wondering where my art has been??!! I absolutely, create every day, mostly in my drawing journals. I completely filled my little my little green Handbook journal this weekend. Many of the pages are my brainstorms and ideas for projects, classes and workshops.

Lots of watercolor in this journal. It's my favorite for bright, vibrant color. Love the little pocket in the back that you can store your treasures. The elastic band is great for wrapping it all up!
