If you just got your hands on a new Samsung Galaxy S Vibrant or Captivate , you may have noticed some GPS issues. Samsung reportedly has as well, and may address this in a coming OTA fix. In the meantime, it's not hard to fix the problem yourself -- provided you go slow and follow the instructions, which are detailed after the break. [ Xda-Developers via Intomobile ] Step 1 -- Open menu > settings > Location & Security. Uncheck the box next to "Use Wireless Networks" Step 2 -- Open the dialer (the phone button) and enter the following: *#*#1472365#*#* .

We’ve received various reports that the GPS on the Samsung Vibrant is broken out of the box. Locking on to a GPS signal can take can take a while, if it does at all, and the location can be rather inaccurate at that. The folks at XDA-Developers have figured out a quick fix that won’t require doing any serious modifications to your phone’s software. Samsung says they are working on an update proper to fix the GPS issues with the phone, but for now just follow these instructions to get yours acting the way it should. And that should do it. This fix is also confirmed to work on the Samsung Captivate , but attempting to replicate this on the international Galaxy S I had no luck.

There are many advantages to rooting your device. One of my favorite, next to switching ROMs, is tethering. It has come in handy so many times on road trips.
