The steady formation of new brain cells in adults may represent more than merely a patching up of aging brains, a new study has shown.

New Adult Brain Cells May Be Central To Lifelong Learning

The new adult brain cells may serve to give the adult brain the same kind of learning ability that young brains have while still allowing the existing, mature circuitry to maintain stability. In their experiments, Hongjun Song and colleagues used a virus to selectively label new brain cells with a fluorescent protein in the hippocampus, a major brain center for learning and memory, of adult mice. The researchers then analyzed the electrophysiological properties of the new neurons at different times after their formation. This analysis enabled them to measure how adaptable, or "plastic," the brain cells were. The Brain in Adult Life and Normal Aging — The Dana Guide. The Human Brain - Exercise. In a sedentary group of people aged 60 to 75, University of Illinois researchers introduced them to a fitness regime.

For six months the elders had either an aerobic or non-aerobic workout for up to 90 minutes, three times a week. "We chose couch potatoes," said the study's lead author, cognitive neuroscientist Arthur Kramer. The 214 healthy adults hadn't been involved in any physical exercise for the previous 5 to 10 years. "Indeed most of our subjects hadn't done any formal exercise for more like 30 or 40 years. " One group took long walks three times a week, and the other only did gentle toning and stretching exercises using weights.

"We see selective cognitive benefits which accompany improvement in aerobic fitness," says Kramer. Even beyond age 70, cardiovascular exercise can improve memory and reasoning skills. Topics. Sensory Training - Who Benefits - Learning Breakthrough. New Way to Bulk Up Your Brain: Learn Like a Baby. The brains of adults can grow in a startlingly short time if made to learn tasks much as children do, according to a new study by researchers who are hoping the insight will help treat brain disorders.

The scientists unexpectedly discovered that adult brains can grow after less than two hours of tasks, imitating the rapid learning that occurs during early childhood. Scientists have long known that the brains of infants grow rapidly. In recent years, an increasing amount of research also has found that the adult brain is still plastic or malleable, with its gray matter capable of growing after experiences that last even only weeks. "Our finding suggests that the adult human brain is far more plastic than previously believed," researcher Li-Hai Tan, a cognitive neuroscientist at the University of Hong Kong, told LiveScience. The scientists were analyzing the effects of language on color perception, the matter of a long-standing debate.

Optimizing Memory in the Adult Brain. By Donalee Markus Michelle walked into the kitchen, paused, and looked around.

Optimizing Memory in the Adult Brain

Just moments before she knew that there was something she had to do in here. Now it completely slipped her mind. She searched for clues, something to prompt her memory. She opened cabinets and drawers, fingered the cool marble countertop, mentally retraced her steps. For many people the first sign of aging is a "senior moment" like the one described above—a sudden, inexplicable lapse of memory. Research about Alzheimer's has lead to new insights into what it takes to maintain a healthy brain or at least slow down the aging process. Why then are the "baby boomers" (age 40+)—who are still actively engaged at work and in their communities, who recognize the value of good nutrition and healthy life styles—crowding into classrooms to learn how to remember strings of numbers and never forget a face or name?
