10 Electric Planes to Watch

The feat deservedly got a lot of attention, but it’s just the tip of the iceberg: Electric flying has been a reality for quite some time, and it’s never been more practical. Aviation is a slow-moving industry, but the daring designers of electric aircraft have made a lot of progress recently. During the past two years, as a number of key technologies—batteries, controllers, motors, and materials—have neared maturity and become easier to source at more affordable prices, there has been a minor boom of sorts in the offering of electric drives for small planes. Because batteries still haven’t made the energy-density quantum leap that we all hoped for—gasoline’s energy density is still about 13 times that of the best lithium-ion batteries—most electric planes are self-launching gliders or motorized gliders. I've now had a chance to see and test virtually all the EasyStar clones out there, so this post will compare them all and make recommendations.

Roundup/Review of all the EasyStar clones

There are a few others out there by different names, but I think most are just rebadged versions of the ones below. Bottom line: I think the HobbyKing Bixler (see below) is the best option. First, the baseline: The classic Multiplex EasyStar ($72 for basic airframe, no electronics) Pro: Lots of cockpit room, tough, flies well. Con: Only 3 channels, comes with terrible brushed motor that must be upgraded, rudder too small and must be enlarged. HobbyKing Bixler It's available as a kit, a RTF with a 4 channel radio, and an ARF without radio. Some of the advantages of the Bixler, compared to the EasyStar and the other clones: AileronsBig cockpit area, with tail servos on the outsideDecent brushless motorAvailable in ARF form with servos installed but not a useless radio that you have to throw awayInexpensive Con: Plastic motor pylon is noisy.

I've made a few modifications in order to improve the rigidity and durability of the frame. The arms are still angled outwards at 25 degrees in order to take on loads more axially in a crash. The motor holes are designed for the Turnigy 2900KV motors and the controller board posts are designed for 50mm boards with 45mm hole spacing. Drone vs Phone: Samsung Galaxy S IV - Drone Strike. Incredible HLQ (Heavy Lift Quadcopter) by Incredible HLQ Engineering Team

We have been hard at work developing HLQ and hope that you will find it as exciting as we do. Please take a look at our video and/or continue reading to learn all about HLQ and how your support can help make the project a reality. We are a group of mechanical engineering student working on our senior project at San Jose State university in San Jose, California. The group consists of 4 members: Nick Conover, Chris Fulmer, Carlos Guerrero, and Gabriel Tellez. We each carry a specific set of skills and are cap-stoning in 2 different disciplines: Mechatronics, and Mechanical Design. We are designing and building a Heavy Lift Quadcopter (HLQ) which we are calling Incredible HLQ (sounds like "Hulk").

In order to accomplish the 50 pound goal, HLQ will utilize a drive train powered by two gasoline two-stroke engines of about 12.5 HP each. Flight control will utilize DIYDrone's Ardupilot APM2.5+ module. Incredible HLQ. Home Built Personal Helicopter Takes Flight For First Time. Ultra light Autogyro.
