Coming across a design that is so paper-thin yet has an undisputed structural integrity is always awe-inspiring, and Ran Amitai’s furniture certainly provides that ‘wow’ factor.
The Nature of material is a series of folded, stackable furniture in which a spread of laser cut aluminum sheet is bent into form using a bending mold. Amitai’s design uses strong origami sensibilities – a play between straight and soft folds, and how the stool surface softly bends as it reacts to the folding of its legs. The project was initially conceived by making smale-scale paper models in which Amitai would translate into a life-size sheet metal prototype to check for stability. Designer info: Ran Amitai is a recent graduate at the Bezalel Academy of Art and Design in Jerusalem, Israel. Nature of Material was Ran’s final project at Bezalel, and will exhibited alongside the Israeli design group, Bakery, in the upcoming Salone Satellite Milan 2010.
