Ezio Manzini: The Material of Invention

His 1989 book The Material of Invention captures the beginning of materials era that we now take for granted. Manzini’s book “examines the way in which matter become material i.e how matter becomes capable of being integrated into design and in the end becomes part of a product” through supplying “cognitive tools and cultural reference”. Ezio Manzini - Design for Social Innovation and Sustainability

A multiplicity of institutions, enterprises, non-profit organisations, but also and most of all, individual citizens and their associations have been capable to move outside the mainstream models of living and producing and to invent new and sustainable ones.Social innovation is driven by diffuse creativity and entrepreneurship. That is, by resources that, in a densely populated and highly connected world, are very abundant (if only they are recognized and valorised). In the next future, social innovation has high potentialities to become a major driver of change.

But something has to be done to help the process.Social innovation cannot be planned, but it can be made more probable creating favourable environments and empowering creative people. It's what I began asking myself after attending the premiere of Gary Hustwit's new film Objectified. The film features several heavyweights in the design industry, among many others: Jonathan Ive, Paola Antonelli and Karim Rashid, who was present for a discussion and Q&A after the film. I was struck by an opinion shared by Karim Rashid that shed some light on his own work, an opinion which has lingered in my creative process ever since: Why do we feel like we need to keep revisiting the archetype over and over and over again?
