Power door operator The Power door operator enables your elevator door to automatically open or close. You’ll notice that the door opens smoothly and quietly, but you won’t see the device that makes it possible. It’s hidden from view. A slow-close feature allows the door to reduce its closing speed when it’s four inches from fully closed. For added safety, the Power door operator automatically opens if it encounters an obstruction.

24-26 (Fri-Sun): It's moving time!! On Friday, we moved into our dome. We're a long, long way from being "done", but at least now we live here. Now that we're moved in, I think it is time to take a break from blogging. I'll continue to periodically update the photo albums.

This web site started out being a documentary of our building adventure for our friends and family. Many others have joined our community of interested parties of thin shell concrete structures. We have totally revised this site as it grew to over 45 pages and over 1,600 photos today.
The pictures above show the front porch screened; this is a real advantage in our buggy environment. The pictures below are older and show the porch before screening. http://home.comcast.net/~ddtitus/

A geodesic dome (IPA: /ʤiədɛsɪk/ or /ʤiədizɪk/ /dəʊm/) is an almost spherical structure based on a network of struts arranged on great circle s ( geodesic s) lying approximately on the surface of a sphere . The geodesics intersect to form triangular elements that have local triangular rigidity and yet also distribute the stress across the entire structure. It is the only man-made structure that gets proportionally stronger as it increases in size. When completed to form a full sphere, it is known as a geodesic sphere . Of all known structures made from linear elements, a geodesic dome has the highest ratio of enclosed volume to weight. http://www.associatepublisher.com/e/g/ge/geodesic_dome.htm

Blogging The Dome

http://blogthedome.blogspot.com/ What: Open house at the Dome When: January 23, 2010, from 2:00 - 6:00 pm Where: Dome Hill (if you know me well enough to want an invite, email me & I'll send you directions) Why: Because we are finally moved into the dome! Hurrah!
I recently bought a 20 year old, 100% off the grid, double geodesic dome near the town of Ward. It sits at about 9000 feet, miles from the nearest power or phone line. There are 3 power systems running throughout.

This is our dome home construction web site. In it you will find all the latest and greatest information about our efforts to build our geodesic dome home. Entering from the front door or the garage, you find our foyer. On the right is a coat closet, and on the left is a door to the house interior. Passing through the door on your left, you have a hallway. Along the left side of this hall rises the stairs to the second floor with built-in storage beneath the stairs.

The Case Of The Disappearing Dome | Monolithic

Can a Monolithic Dome home that is three stories high and that has a diameter of 55 feet just disappear? Almost — if it’s built on a bluff overlooking Lake Michigan in Manitowoc, Wisconsin and if it’s painted a pale blue and if a fog creeps up that bluff. Barbara Stitt, who together with husband Paul own this dream-come-true Monolithic Dome home, said, “On a slightly foggy day, the house just about disappears, which is what we wanted.” The Stitts achieved that effect by choosing just the right shade of blue paint for the outside of their Airform. Wisconsin’s first Monolithic Dome Besides the ability to almost disappear, this dome is unique in other ways.

(click the picture above for a larger close-up of the house and shop) Welcome to our Website! The view above is from the 6,300' (~1920m) Sheep Mountain behind our house in eastern Wyoming. If you look between the rocks in the center, you can see the alternative energy house on the right and the workshop on the left. You can't see any other houses out there because there aren't any!

Refried Domes

It was the call last night that finally did it. “Lloyd, a friend of mine just built a dome in Big Sur and wants to know what to cover it with.” A few days earlier there had been the call from a dome designer I’d met back in the dome glory days. He said there was so much call for information that now he was looking to republish a book he’d written on domebuilding. — Deja vu, all over again.
