Lubkeman Dome | Blog. 24-26 (Fri-Sun): It's moving time!! On Friday, we moved into our dome. We're a long, long way from being "done", but at least now we live here. Now that we're moved in, I think it is time to take a break from blogging. I'll continue to periodically update the photo albums. When something significant happens, I'll write it up. But otherwise, it's time to get on with living. 18-19 (Sat-Sun): This weekend was spent addressing a few little things. 11-12 (Sat-Sun): We're down to doing lots of little things now. 4-5 (Sat-Sun): Our list of projects before move-in is getting shorter. 27-28 (Sat-Sun): All in all, this was a rather quiet weekend. 20 (Sat): With Sunday being Fathers' Day, and I needing a break, this weekend's work was a little short. 13-14 (Sat-Sun): The garage now has its concrete floor complete, and we're to get the pad outside the garage in two weeks. 6-7 (Sat-Sun): Half the garage got its concrete floor this past week. 10 (Sun): Saturday was a day off for family.

I bought a 33 year old, 100% off the grid, double geodesic dome near the town of Ward back in 2001. It sits at about 9000 feet, miles from the nearest power or phone line. There are 3 power systems running throughout. A 120VAC, running off the invertor, 24VDC for lighing, and 12VDC, for 12V appliances. There are both photovoltaic panels and wind generators. In addition to the domes, there is a garage with an apartment built into it. Originally there was no phone service at all, and to use a cell phone, you had to walk to the top of the hill behind the house.

For some pictures taken when I bought this place, go here. Solar Panels Solec There are currently 2 #10160 panels on the domes. ARCO Solar International There are currently 8 16-2000 panels on the domes. Wind Generators World Power Technologies There is a still working Whisper 400 wind generator. Can a Monolithic Dome home that is three stories high and that has a diameter of 55 feet just disappear? Almost — if it’s built on a bluff overlooking Lake Michigan in Manitowoc, Wisconsin and if it’s painted a pale blue and if a fog creeps up that bluff. Barbara Stitt, who together with husband Paul own this dream-come-true Monolithic Dome home, said, “On a slightly foggy day, the house just about disappears, which is what we wanted.” The Stitts achieved that effect by choosing just the right shade of blue paint for the outside of their Airform. Wisconsin’s first Monolithic Dome Besides the ability to almost disappear, this dome is unique in other ways. It’s Wisconsin’s first and, as such, it created quite a stir in Manitowoc, a city populated by about 35,000. Located on a 1.7-acre site, this home’s three stories provide 4000 square feet of living space. The plan The design So Barbara and Robert worked on the dome’s design and some of its exterior and interior details together.

Darrin's Home Page. Refried Domes. It was the call last night that finally did it. “Lloyd, a friend of mine just built a dome in Big Sur and wants to know what to cover it with.” A few days earlier there had been the call from a dome designer I’d met back in the dome glory days. He said there was so much call for information that now he was looking to republish a book he’d written on domebuilding. — Deja vu, all over again. As Yogi Berra said. I started building domes in Big Sur in 1966.

With all the interest in domes and other alternative concepts of the times, and due to the extent of our dome design and experimentation, we soon became the focus and clearing house for the counterculture’s domebuilding movement of the late ’60s/’70s. By 1970 it was obvious that there was enough information and interest for some type of publication. By then we had built 17 domes at Pacific High School, and to tell the truth, the workmanship was less than exquisite. Two years was about as long as the school lasted in full force.

The Eco-Dome is a small home design of approximately 400 square feet (40 sq. meters) interior space. It consists of a large central dome, surrounded by four smaller niches and a wind-scoop, in a clover leaf pattern.

Learning and building an Eco-Dome is the next stage after building a small emergency shelter and provides hands-on learning experience in the essential aspects of Superadobe construction. It's small size of approximately 400 square feet (interior space), makes it a manageable structure for the first time owner builder. The finished "very small house" is self-contained and can become a small guest house, studio apartment, or be the first step in a clustered design for community use in an Eco-Village of vaults and domes. Built from local earth-filled Superadobe coils (earth stabilized with cement or lime).Tree free.Maximum use of space through alternative options. Note: The Eco-Dome plan is a part of the Cal-Earth educational and research program.

Bargains. As I’ve mentioned in other posts, I have a Web Marketing & Development firm with an IT Services division. Having a business/techie background makes me very mindful of the future and what capabilities may be necessary in the years to come. It also allowed me to wire our new Barden Home for Internet/Network, Television, and Telephones. While my firm has great experience in wiring businesses, we really don’t do large home wiring jobs. Not because we can’t or don’t want to, but because people don’t ask for it. I have run most of my PCs wirelessly in our previous houses, and that works fine, but it’s never as efficient as running from a wire.

You can achieve much higher throughput with a cable. What Do I Want to Run? Because I already had to run networking to each room, I decided I would run coax (quad –shield RG6) cable with my network runs so I could have TV in all rooms. World's Greenest Homes - Dome Home. The Dome Geeks. Welcome Dome 2006! Yeah, it's been a while for any updates on this site! What can I say? We've been very busy with projects around the place and trying to squeeze in some sailing and social activities in between. Keith and his business partner Jack started up WaveWorks, Inc. and have been busily manufacturing racing surfskis for Twogood Kayaks Hawaii, Inc. I'll post some pictures of that venture when I get a chance. I've been increcibly busy with work all year which is good financially, but not so good for squeezing in fun. I have put in a lot of work in my garden, however, so that's been a great outlet for stress and nice relaxation. Maija has been chasing lots of sticks in the river and learning how to haul firewood.

I'm calling this phase "finish", but at this point, the word "start" might be more appropriate. There's a lot to do here! We're using Timberline's precut finish-grade plywood panels instead of drywall for the dome interior, a more economical alternative. The panels are being fixed to the frame with a finish nailer.

The joints where the triangles meet are being covered with trim, and the hubs where the triangle points meet are covered with 5" diameter wood discs. We used a coat of primer followed by a coat of Dulux Lifemaster low v.o.c. paint on the panels before putting them up, and are simply painting the trim and doing touchups after the panels are in place. We figured it would be easier to get the bulk of the painting done while the panels were still on the ground. The insulation we chose was a polyurethane spray foam insulation known as Icynene. The basement stairs and the steps to the second floor were built by myself. A few more pictures... Future Homes. Green construction. Residential. Build-diy for homeowners. If everyone built their own homes, contractors and subcontractors would be flipping burgers.

I like contractors and I have a lot of respect for them. They put up with a lot of garbage from clients, inspectors, and quite often their own employees. Whenever I drive past some hard working carpenters in the dead of winter all bundled up, or in the heat of summer sweating like a horse, I realize that they’re tougher than I am. But the biggest reason people opt to not do their own work is ignorance. They don’t know that they are allowed to do it first of all, and secondly, the very idea of attempting to do the complex and demanding work doesn’t seem realistic to them. Let’s bring a few other beliefs into the light of scrutiny here. . . · I don’t have the money to build, and nobody will borrow me money for a construction loan if I’m not a contractor. · I think a person has to be a licensed contractor or journeyman to build his or her own house. · I’ll just rent it’s cheaper. build-diy top of page. Overhead Doors (Garage Doors) The garage doors can be installed before the garage floor has been poured but for a happier installer have the doors installed after the floor has been done. The drywall should be installed before the garage door but the same applies, the door can be installed before the drywall goes on but it makes it much harder for the installer. When purchasing your Garage Doors you may want to consider getting insulated doors. 32. If you have chosen a plan with Brick Work or Rock Face on part of the house this is the time it should be done.
