Mental Math Game

I shared it awhile ago and you guys loved it! You can use this game with random facts, addition, subtraction, times tables or all of the above! All I do is get popsicle sticks and write start on the first stick and then I write down the facts on each stick with the answer to the previous problem on the end of the stick. I give my students a timer and give them one minute ( or a different time based on the ability of the student.) It is an instant workstation or can be used for independent practice.

You can use this strategy not only with math but with language arts also. For the higher students give them a shorter time frame and for the lower kids give them a longer time frame. Unfortunately, we don’t often get past the first row of structures, which are the least challenging. Students need to experience all the different structures on a regular basis. Bar model drawing is a great tool for helping kiddos understand the different problem structures. Let’s look at the three Part-Part-Whole structures. The most straight-forward structure is Whole Unknown, or Missing Sum. Moving down the Part-Part-Whole column, we see Part Unknown. As we move to the bottom of the chart, it gets really interesting! One other note, while these example all have two addends, you can also use more than two addends to provide more of a challenge. 20 Great Ways To Learn Multiplication Facts – Times Tables. Welcome to my second blog in my new series focusing on how to support the older child in Primary school.

20 Great Ways To Learn Multiplication Facts – Times Tables

In this blog I share 20 great ways that can help children learn multiplication facts, or more commonly known as times tables. Let me point out from the beginning, that before helping your child to remember multiplication facts, it is essential that they have an understanding of the concept of multiplication. Multiplication and division can be taught together as they are the opposite operations of each other. Children need to experience both operations together to gain a deep knowledge about the idea of multiplying and dividing. It is important to expose your child to a variety of terms relating to multiplication so they have a greater vocabulary when it comes to mathematics.

However, many children lack confidence in Maths and therefore dislike or are terrified of it. I think that times tables are vital for children to know really well to be successful in both multiplication and division. Once a child knows their times tables and can access them quickly - its half the battle. I do daily drill practice of the multiples of different numbers. I find this is the best way children can quickly recall their tables. I also use games like Shoot - where two children come to the board and face the class and another child writes a problem and says SHOOT! In the classroom, I have a display of the numbers 2-10.
