Two studies published this week, in Science and Nature , confirm that hallucinogenic drugs stimulate healthy brain activity, even promoting the growth of neurons. Ketamine and depression The study in Science , released today, focused entirely on the drug ketamine. Used frequently as an animal sedative, ketamine can also be used to sedate humans and is also taken recreationally because of its hallucinogenic and euphoric effects.

One evening this summer, in our final term at Cambridge, my roommate Katie threw a party. Our set was in a 17th-century attic, and its sloping ceilings framed a gorgeous view: a panorama taking in King’s College Chapel, the billiard-table lawns of the backs and the stately river. In that room you felt the mass of student life that had passed before you: even the doorframe had a musty glamour. Yet on this occasion I had no interest in joining the bright young things drinking vodka from coffee mugs. This wasn’t any virtue on my part.
Some pot smokers feel this way, but they're turned off by the idea of cooking with pot for several reasons. First of all, you can accidentally get too stoned and become paranoid. This is because digesting food takes a long time, so at first you'll think you're not stoned enough, eat some more "special brownies," and then later on it's too late and you have to go through a scary experience. Nobody has ever died from a marijuana overdose, scientists cannot prove that it causes brain damage, and it's unknown whether long-term heavy use has permanent effects (see Erowid.org for more info). Despite marijuana being a relatively safe drug, it's still not very fun to accidentally get too stoned.
