I received the following question from frugal friend Alaina… “My question is… how does one keep their home smelling “frugal” great, besides buying scentsy, glade, airwick, etc. Are there any homemade or DIY ways to keep it smelling good?”

I shared this question on The Frugal Girls Facebook Page, and here are just a few of the awesome ideas that were shared… Christy said: “Mama always used cinnamon and oranges simmering on the stove – better than any candle or artificial fragrance ever!” Bobbi-Jean said: “Whenever I use fresh squeezed lemon juice, I throw the rinds in my garbage disposal… it freshens up my kitchen!” Anjanette said: “Baking soda sprinkled in the carpet and vacuumed up is good.

You can also put vinegar in a dish and let it sit out a bit if you need to absorb some stinky odors.” Sarah said: “A little liquid fabric softener diluted with water in a spray bottle makes a frugal Febreeze.” In Summer, I guess you could do the same with sunnier smelling items.” Leave a comment & share! The Path to Frugality. Dropping the Drip: How to Get Started Making Better Coffee. For some reason, none of my comments ever make it in, but I like to hear myself type so I keep trying... I like the article, but think that there are several methods that deserve more mention. I also think the coffee in the freezer idea was one that must have made its way into the conversation a long time ago, and although relies on a faulty premise, for some reason continues to appear. For years I stored my coffee in the freezer, and it was never as good as fresh. Whole beans in airtight, vacuum packages hold up best - but in my experience only very oily beans are worth trying to store.

Nowadays, I buy what I use in a week (whole beans of course), store them in a vacuum canister in a dark place, and grind as needed. As far as grinding is concerned, I am not aware of a conical blade grinder. I have a blade grinder and it is good for grinding spices. The most important items are good beans, water at the right temp for the process, and a good grinder.
