A while back I read Phil Beadle’s brilliant book, Dancing About Architecture, and felt entirely inspired and liberated by his thoughts on classroom creativity. One idea really rang true with me as a truly creative approach and that is when he talked about the idea of process being the focus and that ‘sometimes outcome should not be defined at all’. Beadle continues that: “If we define the outcome we get what we expect… However if we are prepared to experiment, to focus on process and let ‘outcome’ float around on the breeze waiting to be discovered, something different happens. We either fall flat on our behinds, or we discover new lands; and you cannot discover new lands by keeping one foot in the old country.”
This idea of ‘outcome led by process’ really interests me. The idea wasn’t new to me when I read it though, and I racked my brains to where I thought I’d seen that as a model before: a quick scan of my book shelf and I came to 24 Hour Party People (FAC 424) by Tony Wilson.
