Technology is an integral and growing part of daily living in the twenty-first century. The challenge, then, for teachers, is to use technology effectively in classrooms to help students take ownership for learning and develop the practical and critical thinking skills necessary to better understand the world around them. To meet this challenge, teachers can use an emerging technology tool, GPS receivers, and an emerging GPS-based activity, geocaching, to transform their classrooms from teacher-centered environments to exciting, empowering, exploratory environments that focus on student engagement in the learning process. GPS is a Satellite Navigation System The Global Positioning System is a $12 billion system of 24 satellites (plus a few spares) deployed and maintained by the U.S. Department of Defense (DOD).
Welcome to Opencaching North America! Geocaching is an outdoor sport or activity in which cachers use a GPS receiver to find a "treasure" hidden by other participants. Many caches are secured in watertight containers, containing trinkets and/or a logbook in which cachers record their discovery of the cache.

This travel bug information sheet is formatted to be similar to the one at the WSGA , which appears to be the same as the one you can get at the Geocaching web site. The main difference is that this one is intended to fit on a double-sided credit-card sized piece of paper, which is easier to laminate and take with bugs that don't fit inside a plastic baggie easily. GPS Visualizer: Free geocoders: Convert addresses to GPS coordinates
"Geocoding" is the process of converting street addresses or other locations (ZIP codes, postal codes, city & state, airport IATA/ICAO codes, etc.) to latitude and longitude, which can be entered into a GPS device or geographical software. GPS Visualizer offers several options for geocoding your information. NOTE: If you want to plot addresses on a map , I highly recommend geocoding the points first , saving the results, and THEN running the coordinates through the map form to create a JPEG, PNG, SVG , Google Map , or Google Earth KML/KMZ file . It will be much faster and easier in the long run, because your locations will only need to be processed once . If you only need to find the coordinates of a single location (or a small handful), use GPS Visualizer's Quick Geocoder . This utility uses Yahoo or Google's geocoding service and returns a small map and a nicely formatted table of information.According to the Office of Civil Defense in the 1950s, the shelter was constructed to prepare for ”disasters caused by enemy attacks or other hostile action, or by fire, flood, earthquakes, or other natural causes.” After scouting this place out, I knew we had to spelunk the bejeezus out of it. Anyway, I won’t waste too much time blabbering about the thing when the VIDEO is this AMAZING.
