The Teacher Residency Question : Education Next

(This post also appears at Rick Hess Straight Up .) I’ve gotten a number of questions and comments regarding NCATE’s big Blue Ribbon Panel report , both after my remarks at the National Press Club and in response to yesterday’s post . Thought it worth taking a couple moments to expand and explain a bit, especially because teacher residencies are one of our current “everybody loves ‘em” enthusiasms.
http://www.teachingquality.org/utr Just released! CTQ and the Aspen Institute are proud to release a collaborative report, Creating and sustaining urban teacher residencies: A new way to recruit, prepare, and retain efffective teachers in high-needs districts . Also r ead about the potential impact of UTRs on traditional teacher education in CTQ's Urban teacher residency models and institutes of higher education : Implications for teacher preparation . The Center for Teaching Quality, in partnership with the Aspen Institute and the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE), has been investigating the urban teacher residency (UTR) — a unique response to the longstanding challenges of how to recruit, prepare, and retain bright and capable teachers for high-needs urban schools.

Kony 2012 — Most of us involved with social media have heard of it. For some, learning of Kony and his atrocities is new information. However, my students and I are well aware of the situation; last year we raised over $22,000 dollars to help rebuild schools in Uganda that were destroyed during the war between the LRA and the government. Many people know my heart for this issue, which is likely why I started to receive email. http://shelleywright.wordpress.com/

Khan Academy

http://www.khanacademy.org/ Matrices, vectors, vector spaces, transformations. Covers all topics in a first year college linear algebra course. This is an advanced course normally taken by science or engineering majors after taking at least two semesters of calculus (although calculus really isn't a prereq) so don't confuse this with regular high school algebra.
ETS creates large-scale assessments and related products and services that help students, teachers, school leaders and parents measure student learning. Learn more >

Wikis: Pulling It All Together Online -- THE Journal

Elementary teachers are using wikis in and out of the classroom. The collaborative, teacher-moderated technology allows educators to set up sites quickly and at little or no cost, creating instant learning resources for students. But wikis aren't without their challenges. David Lindsay discovered wikis in 2005, several years before collaborative Web 2.0 innovations would officially infiltrate the educational space. http://thejournal.com/articles/2010/10/20/wikis-pulling-it-all-together-online.aspx

Science starts, and ends, with the natural world, the one we can consistently sense, the big mystery of whateverness, this ether, that we swim in. Everything in a science class should get back to stuff and energy. If it's not grounded in the stuff of the world, it's not science. The only stuff a child can truly know through her senses is the stuff she walks on, the stuff she breathes, the warm blush of sunshine on her face, the whiff of cherry blossoms blooming too early.
