Botany Photo of the Day

Last weekend, I was in Seattle and had the opportunity to visit the Washington Park Arboretum , the Center for Urban Horticulture (both now administered as the University of Washington Botanic Gardens), and the Volunteer Park Conservatory . It was my first visit to the latter, and though it is quite small, I can see why it was recommended to me by some colleagues. That said, I spent most of my time at the arboretum, as it gave me the best opportunity to retrain myself on some of the technical aspects of photography I've let slip (though this is not on display with these photographs). Shrubby species and cultivars of Cornus , or dogwoods, are often grown ornamentally for their colourful stems. http://www.botanicalgarden.ubc.ca/potd/

http://witcheslore.com/bookofshadows/herbology/the-mystery-of-flowers-and-plants/3649/ Witches and apothecaries have been aware of the mysterious and magical properties of plants and flowers for centuries, using them for healing and magic spells. Plants have a personality and individuality, they go through phases and moods just like people, sometimes they are active, other times inactive. It is thought that before a tree is chopped down it actually experiences fear, some plants and flowers are more sensitive than others and react to people’s energy and words.

Plant perception (physiology)

In the study of plant physiology Plant physiology is a subdiscipline of botany concerned with the functioning, or physiology, of plants. http://www.absoluteastronomy.com/topics/Plant_perception_(physiology)
Dr. Pradit Kampermpool marches through his plant nursery, past row upon row of exotic orchids, before stopping, his chest proudly puffed out, in front of an unremarkable, weedy-looking plant. This plant, he says gravely, cost him a fortune. He developed complicated breeding programs and followed them religiously for almost 10 years to produce it, he says. This plant, he says, is a dancing plant. http://www.salon.com/2003/03/11/dancing_plant/
