Some updates on our Go BIG travels, news, and links to sites we like! We just got back from Montréal! I didn’t realize that I had the power to control the weather, but whaddya know, I do. It was perfect – sunny, warm but not humid, and breezy. The locals we met raved about how lucky we were. The World’s Tallest Inclined Tower, the Montréal Tower in Olympic Park. The World’s Largest Underground Pedestrian Network. The Montréal Botanical Garden, the world’s second-largest botanic garden, was a trip highlight, even for the kids.
Usually coming home from vacation is a BIG letdown. On Friday, we were oh-so-thrilled to be the featured guest blogger on Nerd’s Eye View, one of our favorite offbeat, sincere, amazingly written sites!! GBOGH is now listed among an illustrious group of favorite blogs on Larry Cultrera’s Diner Hotline Weblog! I attended the BlogHer conference on August 6th, one of the oldest and largest annual events for professional bloggers, particularly women. Some fellow travel bloggers I’d like you to meet! « coffee with Julie. I’m really thrilled to be hosting a guest post tomorrow by Julie Henning of Road Trips for Families! But let me back up a little in order to introduce her … While I was at BlogHer, there were “Birds of a Feather” lunches that we could join.
I dropped into a seat at the “travel” table and met some really cool women who run really clever blogs. These included (and please let me know if I’ve forgotten someone!) Traci from Go BIG or go Home: a blog which chronicles the visits a small-town family takes going to “world’s largest” attractions — from world’s largest fork to the world’s longest continuous sidewalk. And last but not least, I met another Julie. Julie’s travel specialty is road trips for families. Her blog answers this call with a section titled “Feed Me” on how to travel without eating fast food and chicken trips the entire time (a major pet peeve of mine!)
Travel Journal - Haines, Alaska, grizzly bears, bald eagles and Kroschel Films Wildlife Park by Karen Catchpole for Trans-Americas Journey. Leaving Glacier Bay National Park & Preserve, via our Skagway Air flight out of Gustavus and back to Haines, proves every bit as eventful as our trip into the area, but for different reasons. A weather front has settled into the area and we take off eye to eye with ominous skies. It doesn’t take long for us to run into enough turbulence to toss our small plane around like a rag doll. At one point the plane loses altitude so quickly and so drastically that we hit our heads on the ceiling even though we’ve ratcheted our seatbelts down tight. But we survive the white knuckle trip (honestly, the pilot never even looked very bothered) and find ourselves in Haines once again.
If you ever find yourself in Haines (which you should—it’s a charming place, more on that later), we recommend you settle into the Chilkat Eagle B&B. These are not trained performers—no bears on balls or anything horrible like that. But don’t take it from us. Actually, yes. The fact that there’s no direct way to travel from mainland Nicaragua to Little Corn Island, about 45 miles (100 kms) east of the country’s Caribbean coast, acts as a kind of natural barrier. You have to really, really want to get this simply charming island. You also have to pass through Big Corn Island to do it.
A “crowded” stretch of beach on Little Corn Island in Nicaragua. Once you’re on Big Corn Island (find out how) you’ll need to catch a water taxi (essentially a very long, very exposed motor boat) for the journey to Little Corn Island which costs around US$6 and takes 30 to 60 minutes depending on how rough the passage is (heading to Little Corn is often rougher because you’re gong against the current). We were told there was a plan to start sea plane service from the mainland to the Corn Islands but the sea plane is currently “parked” on Lake Nicaragua near Granada and no one in the area expressed much hope that the service would ever materialize.
