With Hot Water - Place granules in a hot water bath of 160 degrees Fahrenheit, when the material turns clear remove it from the water bath with tongs, allow it cool for a minute or two and then squeeze out any excess water. A standard kitchen thermometer is useful for maintaining the correct temperature. Do NOT Overheat. In the Microwave - Larger masses of ShapeLock can be heated in the microwave oven. http://www.makershed.com/product_p/mkshl1.htm

In 2000 Fabrican patented an instant, sprayable, non-woven fabric. From its base at the Department of Chemical Engineering, Imperial College London, Fabrican technology has captured the imagination of designers, industry and the public around the world. The technology has been developed for use in household, industrial, personal and healthcare, decorative and fashion applications using aerosol cans or spray-guns, and will soon be found in products available everywhere. http://www.fabricanltd.com/index.php

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Papercrete Papercrete is a construction material which consists of re-pulped paper fiber with Portland cement or clay and/or other soil added. First patented in 1928, it has been revived since the 1980s. Although perceived as an environmentally friendly material due to the significant recycled content, this is offset by the presence of cement. The material lacks standardisation, and proper use therefore requires care and experience. Eric Patterson and Mike McCain, who have been ascribed with independently "inventing" papercrete (they called it "padobe" and "fibrous cement"), have both contributed considerably to research into machinery to make it and ways of using it for building.

Hair Glasses is a collection of sustainable fashion eyewear exploring the potential of Human hair. The UK beauty industry imports 15 million pounds worth of human hair per year. As the world’s population continues to increase, human hair has been reimagined as a viable—importantly renewable–material. Hair Glasses comprises of human hair with bioresin as a binding agent, the frames are 100% biodegradable and no harmful substances are released during production. Studio Swine explores how the booming production of hair extensions can be expanded beyond the beauty industry to make other commodities that are equally desirable.

MALIBU, Calif., November 17, 2011 — Researchers at HRL Laboratories, LLC, announced today they have developed the world’s lightest material with a density of 0.9 mg/cc, approximately one hundred times lighter than Styrofoam™. The results of their research―a collaborative effort between HRL, The California Institute of Technology and the University of California, Irvine―are published in the November 18 issue of Science . http://www.domingostotora.com.br/process/process.html In a certified sustainable process, recycled cardboard is broken up into small pieces and turned into a pulp that serves as the base material for furniture, objects and sculptural pieces that are molded by hand, dried in the sun and finished to perfection. In this beautiful and labor intensive process, the cardboard which originated as wood, essentially is brought back full cycle by taking on a wood-like quality again. We believe sustainability happens through actions and not words.

http://www.dezeen.com/2011/07/06/nseps-by-silo/ Show RCA 2011: Royal College of Art graduates Attua Aparicio and Oscar Wanless have invented a new manufacturing process that involves steaming polystyrene beads inside fabric moulds. The designers created a geometric pattern in the table top by fusing different coloured beads and slicing the resulting material to reveal its layers. The process is simple and works like this: We sew moulds from a textile into which we place raw polystyrene granules. We then steam them for a short period of time. When heated the polystyrene expands and fuses, picking up the detail of the stitch and the grain of the textile. As the polystyrene expands it pushes the mould around, expressing the nature of material giving it a fat and muscular feel.

We've often heard the old adage that there is strength in numbers. But in the case of a new wood product from Canada, we've discovered that less really is more. Corelam™ is a unique wood product that uses less material to deliver equal (or greater) strength than typical plywood products of the same dimensions.
