For the First Time, a Message Sent With Neutrinos | Popular Science

Neutrino Message University of Rochester In a major step for truly wireless communications, scientists have figured out how to send a message with neutrinos , transmitting a single word through 780 feet of bedrock and translating it at the other end. It’s just a first step, but the message suggests that someday, submarine crews and maybe average civilians will communicate by sending chargeless, ghostly particles through any obstacle.

Breathtaking NASA Photos

Unless you can afford a ticket to space ($200,000 with Virgin Galactic ), the only way we will ever be able to clearly view our planet in its entirety or any distant galaxies is through the photographs released by NASA (The National Aeronautics and Space Agency). So, here are a few of my favorite pictures taken by NASA from its various space programs. You will find them breathtaking. The space shuttle Endeavour over the colorful horizon of earth. Taken by one of the Expedition 22 crew member before the shuttle was docked with the International Space Station. The International Space Station (ISS) is the largest human-made object ever to orbit the Earth. http://speckyboy.com/2012/02/23/breathtaking-nasa-photos/

The Willamette Meteorite measures about the size and shape of a Volkswagen Bug and weighs some 15 tons. It seems such a massive chunk of iron and nickel would stay put once it smashed into the Earth.

http://m.phys.org/news/2011-12-molybdenite-microchip.html (PhysOrg.com) -- Molybdenite, a new and very promising material, can surpass the physical limits of silicon. EPFL scientists have proven this by making the first molybdenite microchip, with smaller and more energy efficient transistors. After having revealed the electronic advantages of molybdenite, EPFL researchers have now taken the next definitive step. The Laboratory of Nanoscale Electronics and Structures (LANES) has made a chip, or integrated circuit, confirming that molybdenite can surpass the physical limits of silicon in terms of miniaturization, electricity consumption , and mechanical flexibility . “We have built an initial prototype, putting from two to six serial transistors in place, and shown that basic binary logic operations were possible, which proves that we can make a larger chip,” explains LANES director Andras Kis, who recently published two articles on the subject in the scientific journal ACS Nano .

Mobile: New creatures from the deep identified

(PhysOrg.com) -- Strange deep sea creatures discovered by Aberdeen researchers have been confirmed as three new species previously unknown to science. DNA analysis has established that creatures captured by scientists from the University of Aberdeen’s Oceanlab during a voyage to the Mid Atlantic Ocean are members of the Torquaratoridae; a recently discovered family of acorn worms. The identification of the delicate creatures – which could not be collected using the primitive deep sea grabs and dredges of previous centuries – may provide new insight not only into life in the deep sea but the evolution of life on earth. The Torquaratoridae, which were captured last year using a remotely operated vehicle launched from the RRS James Cook , have no eyes and no tail but manage to crawl along the sea floor harvesting food that has fallen from the surface.
