http://www.bulwer-lytton.com/ Since 1982 the English Department at San Jose State University has sponsored the Bulwer-Lytton Fiction Contest, a whimsical literary competition that challenges entrants to compose the opening sentence to the worst of all possible novels. The contest (hereafter referred to as the BLFC) was the brainchild (or Rosemary's baby) of Professor Scott Rice, whose graduate school excavations unearthed the source of the line "It was a dark and stormy night." Sentenced to write a seminar paper on a minor Victorian novelist, he chose the man with the funny hyphenated name, Edward George Bulwer-Lytton , who was best known for perpetrating The Last Days of Pompeii, Eugene Aram, Rienzi, The Caxtons , The Coming Race, and--not least-- Paul Clifford , whose famous opener has been plagiarized repeatedly by the cartoon beagle Snoopy.

Fiction Technique Tip: Writing Clearly

http://writeanovelfast.com/fiction-technique-tip-writing-clearly/ As you write your novel, always remember that it is for your readers. That sounds obvious, yet many novelists are not considerate of their readers. It is especially important to do this in a novel with multiple viewpoint characters. Don’t ever make the reader scratch her head wondering who she’s reading about. At six o’clock Monday morning, Mark was pulling into InterCom’s parking lot. Ellen gazed up at the soaring office building, wondering which floor Darren’s office was on.
The Novel and Short Story Protagonist’s Guild (in league with the Heroes’ Union) has done an extensive survey of members, and we find evidence of a widespread campaign by authors to diminish our stature in fiction. Quit making us oblivious to the evils in the world. We’re tired of being perpetually shocked, confused, surprised, sideswiped, and devastated by the mercurial nature of being alive a world where Bad Things Happen. Why, oh, why do we always have to believe that our lives are picture perfect and destined to stay that way… until BOOM, you drop conflict, tragedy, and upheaval into our laps. Ug.

Need some writing inspiration this weekend? We’ve collected a series of mind-boggling robot demo videos from Boston Dynamics, a company creating robotic tools for the military. As you can see by the Sand Flea robot video embedded above, these videos could inspire an entire bookshelf: a militaristic science fiction novel, a robot-driven horror movie, a chilling spy novel, a tense suspense book, a heroic war novel or a nonfiction examination of the ways robots will change the art of war. Watch the videos below and start writing!
