My first design job was with a small print design agency in Manchester that produced work in varying media: packaging, publications, and marketing support materials, and…direct mail. I soon discovered that the graphic design principles I’d learned in college were of little use when I designed for direct mail, where big, bold, and crowded is the order of the day. In the words of one client—words I will never forget—“whitespace is empty space.” Direct-mail clients need their packages to look down-market, because it works for them. But for just about everything else, my client couldn’t have been further from the truth.
There are some popular sketchy fonts available that are great for grungy and hand-drawn designs and illustrations. My problem is, I want to be able to use this sketchy style in any font. Great Fonts for Web 2.0
Fonts are an essential part of design - but there are thousands of fonts out there, so knowing which ones to use can be quite daunting. Here's a roundup of some fonts that have found popularity recently. American Typewriter is like Courier on steroids - More stylized, prettier - and great for that faux-typewriter effect. 43Things uses it well, and is a pleasant break from san serif fonts. Clarendon is another great serifed font (and, for those interested, is used by a certain antipodean lager ), and Web2.0 social web app site Ning uses it, complemented with a nice shade of green.
