As I am supposed to be the democratic voice in the vintage poster world, it seems only fair that I should give a shout-out to Swann Galleries re: their vintage poster auction-explosion this week (one of their largest to-date, I believe, with a staggering 600+ lots).
I took a brief gander at their wares yestereve, and, amongst the typical array of pretty posters (arranged neither thematically nor chronologically, by the by, so be sure to bring you magnifying glass and detective skills), I noticed a few dashes of fabulousness that cannot go unmentioned. First up, some vintage racism we can probably all agree should not be hung in our living room (but perhaps our home offices might be apropos…..visions of my father’s coveted NINA posters dance through my head).

The streamlined Art Deco styled shell of the locomotive was designed by Raymond Loewy. In 1937, Pennsylvania Railroad officials decided to build a new passenger locomotive to replace its aging K4s locomotive. The PRR officials also hoped that the new S1 steam locomotive would have performance equal to their GG1 electric locomotive. In a collaborative effort, the Pennsylvania Railroad, Baldwin Locomotive Works, the Lima Locomotive Works and the American Locomotive Company contributed to the experimental S1 design. Perhaps it was aviation in the form of Schneider Cup racing airplanes that became progressively more streamlined during the 1920s (along with other high-speed aircraft) that made designer-engineers in other fields sensitive to the benefits streamlining offered in terms of increasing potential top speed and decreasing the amount of energy required to cruise at a given velocity.

Though attempts were made to "clean up" the shapes of steam locomotives in the late 1920s, the early round of streamliners did not have steam locomotives; diesel was the engine of choice. America's first streamlined trains that reached commercial use were the Union Pacific M-10000 and the Burlington Zephyr, both appearing in 1934 to great publicity.
