B.L. Ochman's blog: Three Top Reasons Why Social Media is Still

http://www.whatsnextblog.com/2009/11/three_top_reasons_why_social_media_is_still_a_tough_sell/ By B.L. Ochman Big companies have moved cautiously for eons.
Amid the endless pronouncements about social media -- often shortened to "social" these days by consultants trying to sound like they know what they are talking about -- is the reality that social media is not a solution, or a sure bet. Social media requires a way of thinking that includes willingness to listen to customers, make changes based on feedback and trust employees to talk to customers. The culture of fear (of job loss, of losing message control, of change) is ingrained in corporate cultures. Top management has to want to change. One of the complaints about social media is that it can't be measured. But there are many things that can be measured, including engagement, sentiment and whether increased traffic leads to sales. http://adage.com/article/digitalnext/digital-marketing-ten-things-social-media/140128/

http://www.webmetricsguru.com/archives/2009/12/26-tools-for-social-media-monitoring/ Note: An update to this post, which is being retweeted and syndicated liberally – I did not create the list, below , and it’s far from complete – and several good platforms are missing – such as Alterian/Techrigy and Cision, plus several others. It sees like the list should be updated to be as inclusive as possible – and, in fact, Philip Sheldrake, Luke Brynley Jones (OurSocialTimes) and I are discussing something along that lines, for next year – let’s put it that the ideas are under discussion and there will be more information about it after the new year. This morning I read Dave Chaffey’s post on Online brand reputation or listening software – a review of 26 tools and found a lot of richness in the list, including the idea of segmenting the list of Social Media tools by function (see below): The points I highlighted are big ones, and match up with what I predicted in the Future of Social Media Monitoring presentation I gave in London last month (see below) ..
