After a pompous launch last July, Google announced today that it will replace Titan security keys due to a vulnerability the company discovered in the keys' Bluetooth pairing process.

Google to replace faulty Titan security keys

Google said the security flaw allows attackers to take over users' devices and/or log into users' accounts, although the keys should be safe to use under certain conditions. All users who own Titan security keys that can pair (connect) with a device via Bluetooth are now eligible for a free replacement. Titan security keys without Bluetooth capabilities are not affected, such as those that work via NFC or USB. Owners of Bluetooth-capable Titan keys can access this page to see if their device is vulnerable, where they'll receive instructions on how to apply and receive a replacement.

"If it has a 'T1' or 'T2' on the back of the key, your key is affected by the issue and is eligible for free replacement," Google said today in a blog post. Last week, CEO Sundar Pichai wrote a New York Times op-ed that said “privacy cannot be a luxury good.” But behind the scenes, Google is still collecting a lot of personal information from the services you use, such as Gmail, and some of it can’t be easily deleted. A page called “Purchases ” shows an accurate list of many — though not all — of the things I’ve bought dating back to at least 2012. But because the digital receipts went to my Gmail account, Google has a list of info about my buying habits. Google even knows about things I long forgot I’d purchased, like dress shoes I bought inside a Macy’s store on Sept. 14, 2015. And so on. How Much Does Google Really Know About You? A lot. Researchers craft Android app that reveals menagerie of hidden spyware; legally barred from doing the same with iOS. Yale Privacy Lab and Exodus Privacy's devastating report on the dozens of invasive, dangerous "trackers" hidden in common Android apps was generated by writing code that spied on their target devices' internal operations, uncovering all manner of sneaking trickery. it would be great if we had effective regulatory oversight and the power to seek legal relief from these companies for lying to us and/or sneaking spyware into our lives; but every bit as important is the right to independently audit their actions (as Privacy Lab and Exodus have done) and to install code that overrides the undesirable functions of this spyware -- for example, by blocking its communications or chaffing it with plausible garbage data.

The new Video Intelligence API will allow developers to build applications that can automatically extract entities from a video. Until now, most similar image recognition APIs available in the cloud only focused on doing this for still images, but with the help of this new API, developers will be able to build applications that let users search and discover information in videos. That means you can search for “dog” or “flower,” for example. Besides extracting metadata, the API allows you to tag scene changes in a video. Mobile.reuters. Hopefully by now we all know that the adverts which pepper webpages can be malicious.

That growing threat has driven an ever-increasing use of ad blockers amongst users who aren’t trying to prevent legitimate sites from earning a crust through advertising, but are simply sick of finding their computers under attack from poisoned adverts trying to plant malware or advertisers creepily tracking their movements across the web. With both malvertising and ad blocking on the rise, it’s clear that some pretty big companies are going to feel the pinch. And none, perhaps, more obviously than Google. You see, most people when they think of Google think of it as a search engine. However, that isn’t Google’s core business. They lure you in with an (admittedly terrific) search engine, so they can inject context-sensitive ads in the search results.

The whole thing (it’s short) is worth examining critically. Before we dig in, I want to acknowledge what I consider the first great Nest partnership. I’m not talking about Google. I’m talking about the one between you and the team here at Nest. How patronizing. Let’s all give each other a big hug!
