Like the drunk in the old joke, searching for his lost keys under the streetlamp because the light is better there, we tend to measure the political influence of new media by the most easily quantified metrics: how many eyeballs on Daily Kos ? How many dollars raised through ads on RedState ? On Thursday, however, the monthly Internet Advocacy Roundtable at the Center for American Progress explored a more difficult but more salient question: How do we gauge the Internet's influence on policy debates? At the forefront of efforts to model the online conversation is John Kelly, chief scientist at Morningside Analytics . Speaking at the progressive think tank yesterday, Kelly demonstrated several three-dimensional graphs of the blogosphere his firm has built—each resembling, in his apt characterization, a "spinning brain of colored dots." http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20081221-mapping-the-blogosphere-with-spinning-brain-of-colored-dots.html
