MIR Show – Week 44 – HulloMail, voicemail that’s yours to keep. Andy Munarriz, top chap at HulloMail, dropped in the other week to say hi and tell us about their rather nifty and revolutionary voicemail system. Andy’s rather passionate about voicemail — and whilst HulloMail offers you the standard voicemail-by-phone features, it’s got one huge, huge difference. You now own your voicemail. Instead of messages residing on some server in the middle of nowhere, they’re actually sent directly to your email for you to listen to.

And if you’re a Gmail user (for example), the power and potential of HulloMail really begins to shine through. You can keep every voicemail yourself. You don’t need to worry about constantly dialing up to retrieve messages. If you’re an iPhone user or, better, a G1 user, it’s gorgeous — because you simply click on the attachment and it plays on your handset. Get a free account at HulloMail now and check it out (it’s free for the time being and they’re aiming to offer premium services and fund the free service with advertising). According to sources, HulloMail started the voice-e-mail revolution in the United Kingdom and also challenged the monopoly of mobile operators by creating a platform-agnostic voicemail-to-e-mail MP3 file program, which can be utilized in concert with any wireless carrier.

With the help of HulloMail, U.S. consumers can now easily convert their voicemails into digital MP3 files that can be permanently saved, e-mailed, shared, referenced and enjoyed. Over a decade ago, Andy Munarriz had introduced a concept of making voicemail a fully integrated part of digital communications, which will facilitate anyone with an e-mail account to screen, sort or play their voicemails as MP3 attachments either online or offline, by Web, phone or mobile. “HulloMail is redefining how we think about and utilize voicemail,” said Munarriz. HulloMail could have helped Warren Buffett save Lehman Brothers. Warren Buffett, the Sage of Omaha, knows a thing or two about investing money.

Sadly, he’s not quite up there with his Samsung handset. Or, an alternative viewpoint: Samsung spectacularly failed him when the marketplace really needed his attention. Did you catch this story? Here’s my rough assimilation of it. Bob Diamond, Chairman of Barclays Capital placed a call to the Sage’s mobile asking for assistance with a special type of insurance to help his company take over Lehman Brothers. The Sage was interested and asked our man Bob to fax him some more information and went about his business that evening. At the end of the night, the Sage looked to see if there was a fax waiting.

No. There was no fax. The Sage went to bed. Barclays Capital never heard from the Sage. 10 months later, Time Magazine reports that the Sage finally… asked his daughter Susan about a little indicator he had noticed on the screen: “Can you figure out what’s on there?” Deary me. It’s an antiquated system desperately hobbling on its last leg in an industry where technology moves forward at a nearly absurd rate. While our phones get bigger and better each and every month, our voicemail system has, for the most part, remained the same for over a decade.

That’s not to say there hasn’t been progress. HulloMail’s taken a rather interesting route with their service; unlike the standard voicemail system and competing services, all voice messages are stored by the user – or, at least, the user’s email service. Voice-Email Innovator HulloMail(TM) Launches Its Highly Anticipated iPhone App and Debuts Its Powerful New Smart Voice Messaging Technology - PRNewswire - Entrepreneur.com. HulloMail an alternative to Visual Voicemail - AVForums.com. TMC. HulloMail launches voice-emails (“Hullos”) and iPhone app: Total genius! I’ve been using HulloMail as my voicemail replacement for about 6 months and it’s been flippin’ fantastic (not to mention the fact it’s actually free of charge!). I really like the way that voicemails arrive as emails with audio attachments in my Google Mail, however in recent months, HulloMail have been innovating like crazy to deliver their service in a mobile application. As a result, I’m a heavy, heavy user of their BlackBerry application that lets me flick through and play my voicemails as necessary.

I’ve also installed and made a lot of use of their Android app. And I’ve been waiting for their iPhone app too. The brilliance of the HulloMail service is that it’s handset independent. I’ve obviously redirected my main number to HulloMail so if you call me and I can’t answer, you’ll be handed over seamlessly to the HulloMail system. There’s a real bit of innovation that’s arrived with the iPhone app though: They’re called “Hullos”. As Rolf Harris says, can-you-guess-what-it-is-yet? HulloMail’s iPhone app adds ‘free’ audio messaging to its visual voicemail service. [UK] HulloMail, the visual voicemail provider, recently released its dedicated app for the iPhone, available in the UK and US-only. The app brings the complete HulloMail visual voicemail feature set to the device, most of which is fairly redundant for iPhone owners whose networks already support Apple’s own visual voicemail implementation.

(Orange UK, which recently began selling the iPhone, currently doesn’t, something that HulloMail is obviously keen to point out.) Where things get a little more interesting, however, is that the app also offers the ability to record and send audio messages to other HulloMail users or to any email address via a the phone’s data plan, therefore bypassing the operators own voice carriage. Not only is this another example of a future where voice is just another form of data but it puts HulloMail on a trajectory where it could begin to compete with ‘phonecasting’ service iPadio and, to a lesser extent, the more high profile AudioBoo. Free voicemail sounds good, but is it as convenient as standard voicemail?

With HulloMail we'd say it's better, although getting started could be a little simpler. HulloMail replaces the standard voicemail on your BlackBerry, and it gives you lots more options for listening to them if you're away from your phone (or you're travelling and don't want to pay for the phone call to get the message). When HulloMail takes a voicemail for you, you get an email with an MP3 attachment (in the future you'll be able to switch this to other audio formats if you want). You can listen to the message on your PC in your email software, you can listen to it on your BlackBerry, you can go to the Web page and listen to it or you can call from any phone and listen to your messages the old-fashioned way.

Because it's an email you can forward it (ideal for sharing directions without having to copy them down). Again that's just a little more confusing that it needs to be though you quickly get used to it. SpinVox Refugees, HulloMail awaits! Now if you’re one of the thousands about to be left high and dry with a defunct voicemail service after Nuance killed-off SpinVox’s consumer operation (well, it’s almost dead — this Friday it’s switched off), you might like to take a look at HulloMail.

I’ve been using it for a long time and I’m entirely delighted with the service, functionality and concept — it interoperates beautifully with my Google Mail. Here’s a little more about the service: The HulloMail visual voicemail service provides messages and missed calls directly to the user’s mobile app, email and/or their My HulloMail online account. In one click, users can instantly play the voicemail, as well as save, forward, archive, delete or even post it onto social media sites or forums as an MP3 file.HulloMail also allows subscribers to communicate for free by sending ‘Hullos’, which are short, instant messages that enable users to send and receive voice messages without actually having to make a phone call.

Video: HulloMail working on the iPad. Hullomail makes mobile phone voicemails business friendly. Voicemails on a mobile are mostly not up to business needs. Once played, they disappear after a few days, even if you don’t want them to. So that crucial phone number or address can be lost. The iPhone’s visual voicemail was a partial solution to this, with the recordings delivered to your handset instead of stored on the network’s server. But Orange and Vodafone iPhone users don’t have this yet. A better answer is HulloMail, a London-based free service which grabs voicemails as they’re left and sends them to you in an email which you can keep as long as you want. There are also HulloMail apps for the iPhone, Android and BlackBerry handsets, which make it especially easy to listen to voicemails on your phone.

HulloMail has implications when you’re abroad, too, when dialling your mobile’s voicemail to pick up messages in the normal way is prohibitively expensive. The newest HulloMail service is the Hullo. The services, including business-oriented extras, are growing. HulloMail Free 4 stars. The Future of Voicemail Video Series: Introduction. The Future of Voicemail Video Series is coming shortly to Mobile Industry Review. For a long time I’ve been pondering the possibilities of the medium of voicemail. For years it’s been overlooked. We all rely on it daily, yet I’m sure hardly any of us give it more than a cursory glance once every few years. For such a critical service, I’ve found it really strange that, on the face of it, the innovation — aside from a few outstanding players — appears to have ground to a halt back in 1995. I do remember that various operators here in the UK used ‘free voicemail’ as service feature.

Whilst it’s a ubiquitous service that (prior to getting her iPhone), even my mother understood, it’s time we saw some innovation. It’s these questions and more that I hope to answer through the upcoming Future of Voicemail Video Series. The format is this: I will be interviewing 5 leading minds in the mobile and technology field on camera over the next few weeks. HulloMail 2.2 Goes Live on Android | AndroidGuys. Today HulloMail announced the launch of its free visual voicemail product for Android devices in the U.S. and U.K.

HulloMail 2.2 has the ability to replace the voicemail service that is provided by wireless network operators. When a voicemail is received, HulloMail converts the voicemail to an MP3 file and then emails the file to the user as an attachment. It can then be listened to, saved, and forwarded to others.
