Studio Manager, Lee introduces some of the pupils to our characters.

The pupils get to play on the Emily Button website. A fun day was had in our London studio on Tuesday as Studio Manager Lee invited year 5 pupils (ages 7-10) of St. William of York Primary School SE London to visit the Tigerprint London Creative studio. 30 children and 6 teachers toured around and had a chance to meet all of the artists, designers and managers in the studio to find out and understand a little about what we do.

The children then had a fun afternoon where they gave feedback on some of the characters we create for Marks & Spencer . They also all had a chance to use the macs and share their experience of our brand new Emily Button website and their other on-line faves with the team. The children also had the opportunity to draw some cute, cool and crazy characters of their own - maybe we even saw the next generation of Tigerprinters! Talleres: Diseño Geométrico islámica [Más: mocárabes] Muqarnas is the term given to an architectural device unique to Islamic architecture.

Its purpose is to provide a transition between, for example, a square base and a dome. Muqarnas is also frequently used to create a concave semi-vault above an entrance to a building or to provide a decorative cornice along the perimeters of a ceiling or beneath a balcony. Different regions in the Islamic world have used different styles of construction techniques in their history. Muqarnas compositions are very suitable for contemporary interpretations.

The image on the right is a model that was made using the style that is typical for North Africa and Andalucia. By combining differently angled elements (e.g 30° or 60°) and having two versions of each, a great variety of designs can be made. This shows a muqarnas composition using a construction style that is typical for Iran and Central Asia. There are different traditions when it comes to what the curve of the muqarnas composition appears like.

A background to two-dimensional design – geometry and pattern A brief introduction to the history of Arabic or Islamic geometry is set out on the next page together with methods by which those geometries can be readily constructed using the traditional means of a straight edge and a pair of compasses.

These first four illustrations are of Islamic geometric patterns that have been executed on different materials, respectively silver, stone, leather and glazed mosaic, and are commonly considered representative of Islamic design. While not demonstrating the wide variety of geometric treatments to be found in Islamic or Arab geometries, they are here to introduce something of the design character and materials that were used in decoration. The patterns with which we are familiar are to be found within a variety of Islamic cultures, but are often considered to be common to areas of Arab conquest.

You can follow us at: January 18, 2012 Winco family can be labelled a humanist sans-serif, but in spirit it is more closely related to that rather rare typeface category called ‘glyphic’ or ‘incise’. Glyphic faces occupy a place roughly half-way between seriffed renaissance book faces and sans-serifs. The classic examples are Optima (Hermann Zapf) and Albertus (Berthold Wolpe), with Pascal (José Mendoza) sometimes mentioned as a more calligraphically inspired cousin to Optima.

While occupying a class of their own in most type categorizations, ‘incises’ seem an underrepresented genre when looking exclusively at printing types. While conceiving Winco, Ramiro Espinoza studied the work of these masters of postwar book cover design. 80 + usos muy inspiradores de la imagen de la revista Tipografía Tripwire en VisualizeUs.
