Motion quotient: IQ predicted by ability to filter motion (w/ video) A brief visual task can predict IQ, according to a new study. This surprisingly simple exercise measures the brain's unconscious ability to filter out visual movement. The study shows that individuals whose brains are better at automatically suppressing background motion perform better on standard measures of intelligence. The test is the first purely sensory assessment to be strongly correlated with IQ and may provide a non-verbal and culturally unbiased tool for scientists seeking to understand neural processes associated with general intelligence.

"Because intelligence is such a broad construct, you can't really track it back to one part of the brain," says Duje Tadin, a senior author on the study and an assistant professor of brain and cognitive sciences at the University of Rochester. "But since this task is so simple and so closely linked to IQ, it may give us clues about what makes a brain more efficient, and, consequently, more intelligent. " Share Video undefined.

Memory. Focus. Bioactive Compound in Turmeric Regenerates Brain Stem Cells. Components of turmeric – a well-known ingredient in curry spice – are wildly studied today for its anti-inflammatory effects and cancer prevention. It turns out, a lesser-known bioactive turmeric compound promotes stem cell proliferation and differentiation in the brain, according to new research recently published in the open access journal Stem Cell Research & Therapy. Results suggest aromatic turmerone could be a potential for treating neurological disorders, such as stroke and Alzheimer’s disease.

Of course, the potential for researchers lies in its becoming a future drug candidate. The study looked at the effects of aromatic (ar-) turmerone on endogenous neutral stem cells (NSC), which are stem cells found within adult brains. NSC differentiate into neurons, and play an important role in self-repair and recovery of brain function in neurodegenerative diseases. In vitro: Rat fetal NSC were cultured and grown in six different concentrations of ar-turmerone over a 72 hour period. Neurohacking: rewiring your brain | Don Vaughn | TEDxUCLA.

3 Simple Steps to Healing An Emotional Addiction. “Unexpressed emotion will never die. They are buried alive and will come forth later in uglier ways. ~Sigmund Freud~ When I decided to write about this topic I was conflicted because it was through my own emotional turmoil and trauma that I experienced spiritual awakening. Taking my heart past the limit, I was so immersed in my emotional body that my heart couldn’t handle it. And so, I was conflicted, as I am living proof that if you take your heart to the limit and let it be your guide among st the trials and tribulations of the world, it will lead to you to the path you ultimately seek. But then I realized, upon exploring the subject of emotional addiction, that no one should need to take the path, as I did. And so, here are 3 Steps to Healing Emotional Addictions and Why it is So Important. 1. The television, the radio, the magazines and the social media sites (that aren’t teaching you anything).

A new study published in the journal Nature Neuroscience has discovered a genetic link between mental illness and creativity. The research was conducted by scientists from deCODE genetics and the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience (IoPPN) at King’s College, located in London, UK. (source) It’s important to note that this is not the first time a genetic link between creativity and mental illness has been postulated.

As history shows us, many of the world’s most brilliant and creative minds have also struggled with what we perceive to be “mental” issues. In this particular study, genetic risk scores for bipolar disorder and schizophrenia were examined in a sample of approximately 85,000 people. “Although creativity is difficult to define for scientific purposes, researchers consider a creative person to be someone who takes novel approaches requiring cognitive processes that are different from prevailing modes of thought or expression.

This is a big issue. Sources: Memory slips? Consider these seven common causes of forgetfulness. Ask these questions to get to the root of the problem. Do you think you’ve been having more memory slips than usual lately? Annoying but essentially harmless age-related memory impairment is common, but pinpointing the cause isn’t easy. Start by considering common and often reversible causes of memory problems. This could lead to a more productive discussion with your physician. “Anyone concerned about memory should talk with a doctor for further evaluation,” says Dr. David Hsu, a geriatric psychiatrist with the Center for Alzheimer Research and Treatment at Harvard-affiliated Brigham and Women’s Hospital. “Having an honest discussion about memory and getting tested may help open up discussions about other areas of health too.” 1 Are you fatigued?
