Words That Make You Sound Old-Fashioned. Sometimes I think I was born in the wrong decade. No, I don’t mean the 1980s (as much as I would like to say “groovy” on a daily basis) but rather, the 1800s or little after. Sure, they didn’t have self-cleaning litterboxes or Siri or anything else vitally important to my life back then. Instead, they had something infinitely better: a cutesy, old-fashioned vocabulary. Fortnight So, you finally meet up with the mysterious stranger you’ve been chatting with online for the past couple of weeks.

Cuss I’m a big advocate for planning how you’re going to raise your currently non-existent children. Dapper Picture every Englishman you have ever fantasized about. Smitten I’m smitten with the word smitten, you guys. Supper Okay, so this one isn’t that old (I have a friend who claims that her family still says supper instead of dinner but she’s from Maine so it doesn’t really count). I’m not saying that I don’t like the vocabulary of today’s culture necessarily. Image via Shutterstock. Some Words That Need Inventing. A few months ago, I had a dream in which I was doing the commentary for the ‘Sleep Olympics’ (which are exactly what they sound like). In the process of this, I said, “So long as no one goes sprog-mental, everything will be okay.” ‘Sprog-mental’ seemed like such a great term that I decided to make up a meaning for it, which is as follows: Sprog-mental: 1) A way of thinking that is childish in its approach. 2) A giddiness for the simple act of the creation of a new idea without necessarily taking into account the realities or practicalities of the idea’s implications. 3) A way of thinking out an idea in a detailed manner solely for fun, as opposed to thinking to accomplish or create something. 4) A term used to describe someone’s giddy enthusiasm/conviction for an idea of theirs that has become humorous/endearing/disconcerting/disdainful for others.

With this in mind, I decided to compile a list of meanings which don’t yet have a word. 2) The act of trying to remember a forgotten dream. Words That Make You Sound Pretentious. I’m all for using a larger vocabulary but when it comes to maintaining a normal conversation with another human being, there’s an invisible language line that should be heavily avoided in order to not sound pretentious. Words in the English language can be placed in one of two categories: meant to be on paper and/or meant to be spoken aloud. Take the word “Stuff”, for example: Casual conversation: I went to the store and got some stuff for the Lady GaGa costume party. Academic paper: World War 2 had guns and soldiers and stuff. See the difference? Juxtapose (v.) – to place close together or side by side, especially for comparison or contrast This term is unacceptable in either category.

Example: The author juxtaposes the man with a donkey to highlight his lack of intelligence. I blame the inventor of Scrabble for making X and J the most valuable game tiles because that’s the only reason anyone would even invent this word in the first place. Plethora (n.) – overabundance Image via Shutterstock. Index | Hoaxipedia. Welcome to the Hoaxipedia! Description Map Only spending one day in Stockholm? Here are the essentials! We recommend visiting Stockholms Stadshus (Stockholm City Hall), where the Nobel Banquet is held every year. From City Hall tower you also have a wonderful view over the entire city. If you'd rather skip climbing the tower, you can choose the view from Fjällgatan on Södermalm instead. And don't miss Gamla Stan, Stockholm's oldest attraction and one of the best preserved medieval city centers in the world. Naturally a city built on fourteen islands offers marvelous views over the water. And don’t miss the most visited museum in Scandinavia, the Vasa Museum on the green island of Djurgården.

Welcome to Stockholm – the Capital of Scandinavia! Japan Erects Massive Sculpture of the Last Standing Tree from a Forest Destroyed by the 2011 Tsunami. As cleanup continues two years after the deadly tsunami that struck Japan, a decision was made to preserve the memory of the miracle pine tree. The towering 88-foot tall pine tree was the last standing among a forest of 70,000 trees that were completely wiped out along the coast in Rikuzentakata, Iwate prefecture. The tree survived for nearly 18 months after the tsunami but eventually died due to high levels of saline introduced into its environment, after which is was felled and giant molds were created to again form the trunk and branches as they stood when the tree was alive.

The monument is set to be unveiled this week. Customizable Concept Camera by Equinox. The Media Computing Group : BendDesk News Our BendDesk video has been watched 1 million times (Sep 17, 2013). Feb 18, 2013 rotating nebulae GIFs by J P metsavainio rotating nebulae by J-P metsävainioimage © J-P metsävainio finnish astrophotographer J-P metsävainio has captured the elegance of nebulous gas clouds with a series of animated GIFs, using volumetric rotation as a technique to show the immensity of the formation. the 3D experiments are a fusion of science and art where metsävainio will collect distance and other information before building the 3-D conversion. knowing the distance to the nebula, he can fine tune distances of the stars so that the right amount of stars are in front and behind the object. the star in the center is the ionizing source – a hot, young, massive star blasting out ultraviolet light, which makes the nebula glow. the dark ribbons are filaments of dust which absorb optical light. the artist says of the work: knowing the distance nebula, metsävainio can fine tune distances of the stars so that the right amount of stars are in front and behind the object.

Here’s Where You Want To Celebrate National Napping Day. Happy Napping Day, everyone! Yes, today is National Napping Day, and no, it's not a real holiday --- not exactly anyway. The organizers behind the spurious holiday want you to take more naps more regularly, starting now. It's a nice thought, but a reality that's out of reach for most of us. We can't just pull a Costanza and squeeze in under our work desks in the middle of day, however much we might like to.

The Daily Life of a Grandma and Her Odd-Eyed Cat. EmailEmail For the last 13 years Japanese photographer Miyoko Ihara has been taking pictures of her grandma, Misao, to commemorate her life. 9 years ago, 88-year-old Misao found a stray odd-eyed cat in her shed: she called it Fukumaru, hoping that “the god of fuku (good fortune) would come and everything will be smoothed over like maru (circle).” Miyoko has been photographing their beautiful friendship and the way they go about their daily routine ever since. The strong bond between the two glows in every shot: “Partly because they are both hard of hearing, my grandmother and Fukumaru are always looking into each other’s eyes.

They’re really close,” says Miyoko, who has recently published a hard cover photo album “Misao the Big Mama and Fukumaru the Cat“. Website: whitemanekicat.p1.bindsite.jp.
