University. Telescope Optics & Pixel Size These questions illustrate the three major issues of matching a telescope to a CCD camera: 1) sampling, 2) pixel sensitivity, and 3) field of view. These issues must be addressed in order to take CCD images with your telescope that are as pleasing to look at as they are scientifically useful. Sampling Sampling refers to how many pixels are used to produce details. A CCD image is made up of tiny square-shaped pixels. Each pixel has a brightness value that is assigned a shade of gray color by the display routine. Since the pixels are square, the edges of features in the image will have a stair-step appearance. The more pixels and shades of gray that are used, the smoother the edges will be. Images that have blocky or square stars suffer from undersampling. The CCD user has some control over focal length and pixel size.

A good rule of thumb to avoid undersampling is to divide your seeing in half and choose a pixel size that provides that amount of sky coverage. Webcam Astronomy. Ccdastrophotography.com. Welcome to CCDWare. Digital camera telescope camcorders and CCD astronomy adapters. How Does the Digi-T system work? The Digi-T system is quick, secure, and easy to use. The rubber eyeguard is removed from the eyepiece, The Digi-T threaded ring is slipped over the top of the eyepiece and the 3 set screws are tightened, with the included wrench, into the groove left vacant by the rubber eyeguard, the proper step ring then couples the Digi-T ring to the camera. In some cases a lens extension tube or intermediate ring may be required, these are included with the Digi-T system kits as needed.

Why is"Digi-T" better than a conventional eyepiece projection adapter? Digi-T offers a number of significant advantages over conventional eyepiece projection adapters.... Less Vignetting - When coupling a camcorder to a telescope it is imperative that the eyepiece lens and the camcorder lens are as close together as possible, a separation of even 1/2" will result in an image like looking through a soda straw. Which Camcorders will the Digi-T System fit? A word on vignetting...? 1. 2. 3. Apogee provides high-performance CCD digital imaging cameras. CCD Imaging Equipment. Starlight Xpress MX516 Monochrome CCD Camera The Starlight Xpress MX516 Monochrome CCD camera was the first CCD camera that I owned.

For its cost its performance was very good. The MX516 is extremely compact. In fact it has been called the 'eyepiece camera' because it can be placed directly into a 2 inch eyepiece holder. SBIG ST-7E CCD Camera The SBIG ST-7E CCD Camera is much more expensive than the Starlight Xpress MX516 but has more capabilities. First, let's discuss self-guiding. Now lets look at image binning. Finally, lets look at programmable cooling. The overall quantum efficiency (sensitivity) of the ST-7E seems to be higher than the MX516. One other difference between the MX516 and the ST7E is the shutter. SBIG ST-2000XM CCD Camera I purchased the SBIG ST-2000XM CCD Camera in November 2005. SBIG STL-11000M CCD Camera In 2008 I purchased the SBIG STL-11000M CCD Camera . CFW8 Filter Wheel The CFW8 comes with its own DOS based control software but I have used MaximDL to control it. S Guide to CCD Imaging. While this seems like a straightforward procedure, there are some tricks to assembling all the imaging accessories which will help you avoid problems during an imaging session.

Mounting the CCD Camera There are quite a few different ways to attach a CCD camera to a telescope. It mostly depends on what you wish to image, but also on the type of CCD you have and the type of telescope being used. For deep-sky imaging, the usual procedure is to mount the CCD at the prime focus location, where an eyepiece would usually be placed (the rear of a refractor or Cassegrain, and in the focuser at the front of a Newtonian). Often a focal-reducer is used to shorten the exposure time and widen the field of view. For planetary and lunar imaging, more magnification is desired, so a Barlow lens or eyepiece projection adapter is used. For extremely wide-field imaging, a CCD may be mounted piggyback, riding atop the telescope with a camera lens attached. Accessories Next, Firing Up the Computer.... Next Page.
