Timothy Dawson The image of medieval and Renaissance weaponry in Europe, just as many other areas of life in the period, is the subject of many widely accepted 'facts' of uncertain origin. The remark that gives this article its title embodies two of the most widespread of these. The two ideas it expresses are that swords of the narrowly-defined 'Middle Ages' (that is prior to c.1400, to pick a somewhat arbitrary figure) were clumsy, heavy bludgeoning implements, and that, conversely, swords of the 'Renaissance' (after c.1400), and especially the late Renaissance, were light and dexterous tools. There are many thousands of surviving swords in collections around the world, with the quantity increasing as the period progresses. Main classes of swords In terms of contextualising the weight of a sword, it can be assigned to one of three functional categories of weapons intended for combat use - SwordMaster. Untitled. The Medieval and Renaissance Potters Wheels 12th -16th C There appear to be three variations of potters wheel use during the medieval period in Europe.

These vary somewhat in provable location, period an application. Where there is no direct evidence for a particular type it can be theorised that a certain type may have been used based on ceramic finds. Prior to the 12th century wheel thrown pottery in London is not common. The Cartwheel type or tour au baton Illustrations of this can be seen in the French ms 'Bible Morelisee' It can still be seen in the 15th century ( Agathocles a son tour a painting by Jean Fouquet)and was in use in Normandy and Brittany up to the beginning of this century. It is a single wheel, with a circular head where the pot is formed, it is rotated by means of a stick or baton until momentum is built up. Ceramic evidence of this in archaeology is suggested by typical Rouen wares and the London types which follow this trend.

Canterbury Archaeological Trust - Longmarket Pottery

However, during the course of the excavation excavated materials has been rapidly processed and the greater part of the post mid-twelfth century pottery corpus has been 'spot-dated'. The Longmarket excavation is proving to be exceptional. both archaeologically and ceramically, with many new and intriguing finds of all periods. The Canterbury Excavation Committee and Trust sites in the Marlowe area provided the city with excellent Early-Late Anglo-Saxon ceramic sequences: it is already clear that Longmarket will do much the same with its late twelfth- to early seventeenth-century levels.

There are stratified sequences incorporation a remarkable quantity of ceramically rich garderobes, cess-tanks and rubbish pits. Moreover there are good indications that this sequence extends back to at least the ninth century. In addition there is ample material to fill out and confirm our knowledge and dating of suspected trends. Canterbury Archaeological Trust - Two Medieval London-type jugs from Longmarket. Two of the most significant medieval pots found on the Longmarket site are the subject of this note.

Both are of considerable interest and beauty and although broken they are remarkable for their state of completeness and preservation. The reason for their excellent condition is that both vessels were thrown to the bottom of two separate cess-pits or latrines where they lay undisturbed for the next seven centuries. Both are glazed wheel-thrown jugs in what is known as London-type ware. The kilns for this `type' have never been discovered but there is little doubt that it was made somewhere in the London area, at a time when London potters were heavily influenced by French pottery styles.
