"The Case for Mars" is the sixth installment in the Symphony of Science music video series. It features Robert Zubrin, Carl Sagan, Brian Cox, and Penelope Boston. Samples come from the documentary "The Mars Underground" , Cosmos , and Wonders of the Solar System . The video is intended to pique curiosity about the planet Mars and to promote human exploration of it. I’ve made some changes in the song selection process this year. In efforts to better reflect the year, I have a system that draws from the weekly charts from throughout 2011 that ensures that all the late-breaking hits (such as “We Found Love” & “Sexy and I Know It”) are included in the 2011 mix. Yet another installment in what has become an annual New Year’s tradition. It’s the United State of Pop, which mashes up the Top 25 songs of the year, according to Billboard magazine. In 2010, pop has gone into serious all-out party mode. In 2009 the music was encouraging us to pick ourselves back up after being knocked down again, and to rock out to some great dance music while you’re at it.

The genes in our bodies can be traced back over three-and-a-half billion years to a single organism, Luca, the Last Universal Common Ancestor. As Luca reproduced, its genes copied and copied and copied and copied, sometimes with mistakes — they transformed. Over time this produced every one of the billions of species of life on earth. Some of these adopted sexual reproduction, combining the genes of individuals, and altogether, the best-adapted life forms prospered.

Rising and Shining at SXSW Getting up early is the most counter intuitive thing you can ask a musician to do, especially during the madness that is SXSW. Not only did The Punch Brothers and Trampled By Turtles get up early, but they absolutely brought the house down when they joined my home station, KUT Austin, in the Four Seasons' ballroom during this year's SXSW and played to upwards of a thousand die hard music fans. As you'll see from the videos below, a little artful lighting made sure everybody forgot that it was 8 AM, and that those are coffee cups, not highballs. (A big thank you to KUT's Storyboard team for their video expertise and KUT engineers Seph Price, John Craig, Brian Urban and Jim Reese for excellent sound.)

I stumbled across this popular video on YouTube, showing a discussion about whether Islam is a peaceful religion. However, the discussion in this video doesn't address the issue at all. The lecturer claims that Islam preaches peace and compassion, but when one student highlights behaviour by Muslims which directly contradict these teachings, the conversation is suddenly diverted into a criticism of American foreign policy. How does this prove Islam to be a peaceful religion? In an argument defending the peaceful nature of Islam, shouldn't there be some kind of condemnation of violent acts being committed by Muslims?
